Monday Morning Thoughts With a Few From Sunday

I seem to start these thought posts to wrap up the weekend, kick off the week on Sundays, but either don't finish or rush so thought I'd just wait to hit publish on Monday as a few more things pop into my head in the morning. It was a good weekend.

Here's pup; he'll wander around rooms smelling, getting himself stuck between things. This was at my daughters. He seemed to like being there.

On Friday morning into early afternoon, Pup and I hung out with grand pup at my daughters. She was supposed to have only a short event to cover, but things changed and he would have been left way too long without being let out. That was a nice diversion to my week as I could run to the cheese store and nab the loss leaders at her very expensive grocery store in town, but with fabulous digital deals some weeks. Friday night I watched the US -Paraguay game. It's sort of a hunt to find where the World Cup games might be broadcast but found on free Tubi. Peacock is airing them but in Spanish, so while I won't understand much, I can still watch.

I finished my family book club book, Friends with Secrets on Saturday, then went to my sisters. She did a fun dinner, make your own pizza hotdish, using mini pans and tons of different topping variations. She also turned on the blenders to make Bushwackers and Mud Slides.  I host in July and won't be so ambitious! She and her husband are the ultimate hosts and regularly have friends and neighbors for sociable gatherings planned and spur of the moment. People will ask, what's hot dish? It's our Minnesota thing for casserole. If you call a dish a casserole in Minnesota, even if the exact same thing, you sound hoity-toity, lol. I linked the blender drinks with recipes in their name above. I had a Bushwacker.

Throwback mug to my working days. Nice to leave the pointless behind and "office" outside.

Friday and yesterday both were dusting and vacuuming days after coffee. Between the windows open or forced AC on humid days, pet fluff, and just a general urge to tidy and have fresh surfaces, every other day seems necessary. I know some people that are much tidier and have higher standards than me do both of these daily. I read my Mom's Club book club book, Warrior Girl Unearthed later and while the NHL game was on in the background. It's still odd to me that two cities/states not known for ice hockey are in the finals, South Carolina and Las Vegas. Can you imagine the AC bills in those arenas to keep the ice frozen in June? Of course, hockey is year round everywhere now, if not the actual season,  it's preseason, camps, and training. Oh, congrats to the Carolina Hurricane!

That was a lot of nonimportant rambling but it feels ok to have non important stuff on my plate. This week I've got a PT session for my hip, my second shingles vaccine, and a meet up with my former work team. I'm very overdue to have coffee or a meal with my MIL and will see if that might work Thursday or Friday. I'm about to go mow the grass in the front and sides. If I'm feeling ambitious, I'll do the back as well as that's pretty quick. I need weeding done, wacking and pulling, and should get the loppers out for twiggy things and sprouting trees where I don't want trees. No grand pup this week as my daughters off work as she had accumulating vacation time and needed a deserved break. I'll walk to the store for fruit to bring to book club at some point as well, with enough time to prep it for a plate or bowl. I hope you have a very good week.

Edit: Casseroles in and of themselves aren't the hoity toity part; calling them casseroles while in Minnesota rather than hot dish is. It was a joke about using the word casserole.

  1. I enjoyed that “rambling.” I have a busy week ahead with lots of important stuff in the run up to our drive east of the mountains. I am happy to do the work, but man oh man, am I looking forested to next Tuesday when I wake up with nothing on my plate.
As for your sister…I am an adequate cook.”, but some people just know how to “put out a spread “ as we called it growing up. My next door neighbor invited me to her son’s hs graduation party, and let me tell you, she put out a beautiful buffet—a taco bar, with actual street tacos (best ones I have ever had) was the main feature, but there were also other things, including a chocolate fountain. My boys told me I had to move now for the shame!

    1. When I'm "on" I can rise to the hostess role. My kids had bountiful spreads at their grad parties, with all the bells and whistles. And I was wiped out for days after. She's just always ready. Good luck with your drive and prep before.

  2. I need to do some weed eating here this week and sprinkle some anti -tick granules around the yard. The ticks have been bad this year here. I’ve heard of hot dish before and it’s nice to be able to put a place to the name. I look for a place to watch tv shows for free too. Why pay when we don’t always have to, right?

    1. Her house has many cozy nooks, but I love her windows seat. Her big dog loves it up there as it looks out at all the comings and goings on her street.

  4. Ha! I never knew a hot dish was our version of a casserole, which is so NOT hoity toity here, ha ha. I remember my second shingles shot well...

    1. Its using the word casserole that cones across as high brow when used. I don't know where and what hotdish started, but we've gone all in on it.

  5. Casserole is what we call it and trust me it is anything but hoity toity! Just through stuff together in a pan and bake.
    The pup is a cutey.

  6. I too am laughing at "casserole" being hoity toity! Around here, it's seen (all too often) as blue collar, working class fare and not "classy enough" to bring to a gathering!

  7. LOL, never thought of a casserole as being hoity toity. Casseroles are the mainstay of a church pot luck get together. Pup looks like he is having a grand time exploring.

    God bless.

    1. We call meat and veg bsked in gravy stew here as well. Hot dish and probably casseroles have this sort of universal revioe- a protein, a search, a binder, and extra and possibly a topping. I'm intrigued to learn about the Lancashire hot pot.

  9. I'll forgive the word "casseroles" (just this once) because I'm definitely not hoity toity!!! And I've been lopping "twiggy things" too this week. (I guess the National Geographic doesn't need to worry about us encroaching on their territory with our superior knowledge of all things green then eh?)!

    1. Nope,Im no threat to others knowledge in gardening. I just hack away or pull what I don't want growing, with whatever tool makes sense in my head.

  10. It sounds like you had a pretty nice week. The book club get together with your family sound fun. It is so hard to watch a fur friend age and go through so much, especially since they can't tell us how they feel.

I was so impressed with team USA's performance. Mind you 9 of them play in Europe and they've got Harry Kane's old boss Poch in charge (even if he has morphed into Russell Crowe!) xxx

  12. Lots of lopping, chopping and weeding at the allotment over the last 2 days. In my case, too much of it. We're getting there, and have only planted things this year that require minimal attention.
Your daughter's window seat looks wonderful.

    1. Give yourself time and rest! She spent a small fortune on a custom measured cushion for the seat. It rivaled what her couch cost but it's a good thickness that absolutely makes a sweet spot.

  13. My thought is, I am eating it whatever you call it, haha! I am sure some think saying casserole is better (not you, but the ones who feel it would be better to use that name vs hot dish) I enjoyed the rambling too, personally, I am a big chatter and rambler!

    1. I truly joke as Hot Dish is a weird name if you think about it...just like when people refer to all sweetened carbonated beverages as soda and it is clearly pop!

  15. Like the others, I enjoy a good ramble. Sometimes it's good to write things down too.
I was watching a Youtuber the other day and she said she was tired of people asking what she's doing in her retirement. She enjoys just doing what she pleases, when she pleases and makes no apologies for it! You've worked hard for your retirement so your time is your own - enjoy even if it is puttering around

    1. There's a bit of a pause when I'm asked like I should be announcing some big project or constant travel. Really though, being able to say I have flexibility to do whatever feels right day to day in some variation is how I reply.
