Weekend-Week Ahead
We never got the rain, just little sprinkles until overnight. We need it even after last Sundays soak. I had both dogs ( and cats) as my daughter helped her cousin. She stayed over Saturday night so she and my son could ride together.
He's still picking through boxes he hauled from California and trying to discard what he doesn't want and make lists of what he needs. He, with help from his sister, successfully got the sectional couch, a couple book shelves, and dinette table hauled to the condo from my friends moms. What's left will fit in cars as they packed the cargo van full, and he'll bring as he goes rather than special trips. I said it was going to be a slow move in!

| He's figuring out the layout, but just wanted this beast in the home for now. |
I got the front and sides mowed Saturday morning before it got too hot. I must get back done today and weed whack. The grass in some places will need the weed whacker too. I walked to the store Saturday odds and ends and produce for dinner and into the new week, but was pretty hot walking home weighed down with groceries and a bottle of wine. It was pleasant after the sun started going down last night, despite weeding not done, and I just sat outside while pup roamed aimlessly and I drank a glass of rose` wine while reading.
Yesterday was productive but in the house stuff and caring for pets. I realized I haven't done my personal laundry since before last weekend. I definitely have too many clothes! When outside with dogs, I did happenstance weeding of rock areas and hand cut around the hostas. The big dog hates the weed whacker so that was off the table.
At the risk of sounding like I'm complaining, I've got two pain in the butts/ unexpected expenses to deal with that came up over the weekend. One, the back outside faucet is dripping and I can't turn it to get it to stop. I had help try and they worried they'd break it turning any harder. I'm moving potted plants and a bucket to catch the water so not to waste. This was the spigot that broke when I was in Greece and cost a small fortune to fix. Calling them this morning is my first task.
Second, my garage door opener motar bit the dust. While very old, it had been working just fine, but that's how things die. It's not worth repairing as I honestly think it's the original from 1991. I can manually lift to open then close the garage door but that's going to be a hassle come fall and winter. I'll add to my list of house expenses before year end. I'm hoping I can find a company that will also replace the seals on the door as well and just have that job done. My son's minimal maintenance condo is looking pretty good to me.
The week ahead is pretty quiet, but I'm determined to tackle purging. I'm meeting a friend if the weather holds out for a concert by the river Thursday night and Saturday night is family book club. Anyone available is going to do our park cleanup too as we didn't get that done yet in the spring. I used to be more of a summer person so am trying hard to lean into the things I enjoy. Just like the extreme cold of winter, I'm less tolerant of the extreme heat and humidity in the summer. These months will pass quickly.

Slow and steady wins the race in terms of moving. I finally bought my cheese grater on Friday, LOL! Hopefully the expenses aren't too great, I need to figure out how to mow my huge lawn too, I wish I had an electric mower so I could just keep going at the back. It keeps getting caught on things and unplugging, it is so annoying.
ReplyDeleteHi JJ, would you consider getting one of those robot mowers? When I was talking to my son's friend he suggested I get one for my back yard but I thought you had to lay down electrical wiring first (like a kinda dog barrier) but apparently it's pretty easy and is done by GPS. Considering what I've spent on my gardener over the years it probably would have been worth it, but I'll stick with this gardener until he retires at least!
DeleteI have a rechargeable mower, no cords. I like it fine enough. I might need to look at the robot. Once you grate your own cheese, you'll never want to buy preshredded.
DeleteThat is one beast of couch indeed!
ReplyDeleteI grew up in an area where one could walk to the grocery store, so that sounds lovely to me. But , it truly WAS uphill both ways. How well I remember the muggy afternoon dispatches to pick up necessary items. The trip to the store wasn’t so bad knowing they had air conditioning in the store. Coming back home, however, was a different story.
Still cool and overcast here. We have had a bit of rain, but that doesn’t do anything for our aquifer. We are still in drought conditions. A burn ban is bound to be implemented this month.
Have a great week!
-Meg B.
Mine is a quick walk, but three punds ofvtbus, and two of that etc. started getting heavy. People need to really watch fires for home maintenance and recreation. It's dry.
DeleteWe need rain too. It is supposed to drop quite a bit later today, but they've said that before so I will believe it when I see it.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad to hear your son has started the process of moving in. I love the floors and the trim.
We had the motor and the door replaced on our garage a couple of years ago and the price wasn't as bad as I had thought but a lot has changed in the last four or five years. Everything is crazy high now.
Good luck with your purging.
We got so little overnight Sunday the garden soil felt barely damp. Ill hold off through the summer a d get some price estimates on the door. We've all four had big expenses this year. Christmas will be very lean, but thats OK for me.
DeleteI can't tell if "this beast" is currently residing temporarily (I HOPE) in your home or his. but I'll admit: I laughed.
ReplyDeleteI totally get the unexpected-but-can't-be-ignored expenses. Uggh. And yay on purging: I'm staerting to put together a mental list of "these need to GO" items so I can them move them to the door and OUT!
Not in my house! Welll, it's a beast but smaller than mine in my family room. Once he gets it positioned, it shouldn't look so large and should be quite efficient for seating within his space.
DeleteI feel like having a house is a never ending sea of money spent on repairs, fixes or just maintenance. Of course, it doesn't always happen every week or month, but maybe because it's unplanned & random, it always bothers me more. That planned bill? Never love them, but I can predict them & add them to my budget & plan accordingly. Home repairs always happen at the worst times. - Hawaii Planner
ReplyDeleteTwo over the weekend was a bother. Now, waiting fir a part again on the spigot. I think I just won't use that one once fixed and not risk it!
DeleteThe garage door - that is on my list of things to get done. My screams like a banshee no matter how much I grease it and I think the springs are about shot. Any day now, the motor will go out and the laser light thingie is kaput. I want a new motor that is wifi compatible so I don't have to get out of the car to get it open!
ReplyDeleteMine always seemed loud. Ill price things out and pay for the replacement in the fall. I too want to move to the current century with the new opener.
DeleteOh, the sectional couch looks good in your son’s new home.
ReplyDeleteI have more clothes bought inexpensively second hand since losing weight as I can find them so cheap! I do donate the ones I buy but don’t care for the fit though. I found a Tweety Bird, Scooby Doo, and Looney Tunes sweatshirts this weekend, so I bought them to keep me warm this winter.
Me and a friend worked on purging downstairs today and I am wiped out!

Its not in the right place but they were tired abd had more stuff to put away. You did well finding cozy wear for the cold months.
DeleteHouse repairs never end! My 25-year old dishwasher is rusted and leaking, so now it's cleaning up by hand until I find the funds to replace it. Roof is a priority, and I've handed over the down payment. I won't ask what's next, but the air con is ancient ...! I hope your son settles into his new home comfortably.
ReplyDelete25 years is a good lifespan but still not fun to spend money on. I'm on my fourth dishwasher in this house-pathetic how poorly things are made, though one-way a total dud, and this one was bought when we moved to stainless and someone reused my white one. I too know a roof is needed within the next 5-7 years.
DeleteI could try and send you some rain, but I doubt you want the tornado watches that have been going with that rain. Our giant rain barrel sprung a leak so Harvey is trying to fix it before the next rain (tomorrow, but I doubt it will be done by tonight).
ReplyDeleteGod bless.
No tornados please. Its still dry even after the Sunday night rain.
DeleteIt certainly is warming up now. I'm already starting to moan about it a little bit. Sigh. I have to remind myself how it didn't seem long ago that I was complaining so much about the cold. The rain here never materialised today either and it looks like what they said was coming tomorrow has just disappeared lol.
ReplyDeleteUgh, sorry about the sudden expenses. It always seems that just when we're back on track something else comes up!
The extremes bother me. Where's the beautiful fall and spring? They seem too short. Houses are like raising kids...always more to spend on them.
DeleteSounds like you have some fun weekend things coming up. Purging can be tedious but worthwhile. I did a fairly big summer clothing purge and have decided to stop mindlessly buying new solid colored tshirts each year. This is the first time in ages that I am actually wearing all of the summer clothing that I own!
ReplyDeleteI'd just like to grab something, know it fits, looks ok, and not think. Just too much stuffed on my closet.
DeleteThat's a whopper of a settee! Your son needs to adopt a few more cats to fill it out! xxx
ReplyDeleteIt's so funny listening to him plan. Kitty needs come first. The couch won't look do monstrous once he gets ut better positioned in the room.
DeleteLooks like a comfy couch, and I love the flooring and windows. I'm sure he is excited .
ReplyDeleteSorry about the home repair expenses. Can you cut the water off to the outside faucet until you can get it repaired? I've thought about those robot mowers like Treaders mentioned, and I think you can even get add on snow plowblower, but they are pricey. Considering how much we paid to have someone plow our driveway, it would pay for itself quickly, and I can't imagine how much it would cost for someone to mow our acre of grass.
It's a very pretty condo with original details. Water is all ir nothing but can cap it while yet another part needs to be ordered. Hmmm, for plowing, that might be a consideration.
DeleteGlad the move is going well.
ReplyDeleteMy outside faucet was so stiff this year as well - and I had trouble getting it off, once I got it on. I actually sprayed with a little WD40 and let it sit a day. It works perfectly now.
This was just replaced so don't think thats it, but what a pain. Ill remember that varicose next year. Fortunately I have another spigot to use.
DeleteThat sofa looks super comfy.
ReplyDeleteI’m waiting for our garage door motor thingy to decide to go…….such a small thing but it will be super inconvenient 😁
Alison in Devon x
Of course, I can manually open, but in the freezing cold ir puringvrsin, not convenient at all. I'd gave to go inside the house open and come back. I see Im in good company with the ire of garage doors.
