Meal Kit Review
A few people asked me my thoughts. I'm probably a marketers dream. Sometimes hearing the benefits over and over on something, even when my gut tells me I don't need this, I cave. Feeling in a meal rut as we are in this hybrid summer but maybe fall time of year, I wanted new to me meals. My YouTube mom viewing addiction has me seeing every meal kit from now until Tuesday marketed with great offers. I succumbed and tried EveryPlate, just a small three meal, two servings commitment.
The verdict...quality was ok, recipes easy, results, tasty, but without that $1.99 per serving introductory price, which really was closer to $3, just too expensive for what they were considering I'm doing better at stocking up on loss leaders for my pantry and freezer. They'll come to $7.50 a meal once the promotion is done. Compared to a restaurant meals or take out, that's not bad, but there was no time savings other than shopping. I had to do all the prep just the same had ingredients been bought in the store.
I knew this, should have known this, but way too much packaging. A dozen tiny little packets with an ounce of seasoning here, and another of soy sauce there, miniscule amounts of shredded cheese and it was almost comical trying to sort and find what was needed. The recipe cards were nice, but noticed the directions were on line in the app, but only visible once you have a sign in account.
The protein was adequate for the serving sizes and had it just been me, nicely portioned for dinner over two nights, or dinner then lunch the next day. My son on the other hand, easily could have eaten both portions, and in fact did with the pork bolegnese penne. Another example, the Smashburger with caramelized onions and chipotle garlic aioli, with wedge potatoes came with just five tiny yellow potatoes. I could fit all five in the palm of my hand.
There were little tips in the kits that I think will help the food rut. I loved the caramelized onions and the chipotle garlic aioli from the burger meal so thinking outside of my normal was a win. Taking five minutes more to add citrus zest and juice to carrots or slice a nice piece of chicken on a slant made presentation of a relatively humble meal feel nicer than my boring baked chicken, rice and steamed vegetables. Using ground pork and tomato paste, but different seasonings makes either a nice taco/ flauta fill or a nice pasta toppings, so more versatility.

I got the "try it bug" out of my system. I'm committed to a second week, then may turn off the subscription. For a total newbie in the kitchen or someone who never would shop and relies on takeout or restaurants, these might be worthwhile. I think EveryPlate probably has more basic options but I've not tried others like Hello Fresh. My daughter tried Purple Carrot in the past and her experience was similar to mine; nice to break a rut but long term, just too expensive and convenience not worth the packaging waste. But if you really want to give it a try yourself, feel free to send me an email at samandcoffee65@gmail.com and I can send the discount link. I can't seem to find a code I can just post.
Good for you for trying something different and it sounds like you got some good inspiration for jazzing up home cooked meals too.
ReplyDeleteA few good ideas came from the kits.
DeleteI think we had similar experience. We tried a few meals plans during COVID, and they were actually great when Nick was cooking for us, and a total kitchen newbie. He was actually quite a good cook, and learned a lot. But, the packaging waste was almost as much of a turn off as the cost. I get offers all the time, and consider going back, particularly because M & I are in that similar rut with just no time. But, he consistently goes to Costco on weekends, so there is really just the meal prep & planning of meals. The prep we have to do regardless, and the planning realistically only takes 20 minutes or so. - Hawaii Planner
ReplyDeleteThe recipes were quite basic, which was t a bad thing. Maybe a day looking at a cookbook would yield as much. I was thinking for my daughter and roommate they'd be a good option to try, but they have issues with delivery.
DeleteThank you. As it was becoming increasingly more common to have just DH and me at the table for dinner, I considered trying a meal subscription. The reason I didn’t is the site on the one I initially investigated wouldn’t let me simply look at the offerings and check my mails. I had to answer questions about what I liked, etc. After about minutes I got annoyed and gave up.
ReplyDeletePlus, we have big appetites here. I imagine what is considered a full portion would leave some of us still hungry.
Slowly getting back in the swing of cooking again. I am not cooking tonight as I have a social/civic obligation planned a long time ago that I feel compelled to attend. But I had two requests for tuna casserole* for Sunday dinner. I almost always honor requests, especially simple ones like that!

*There is a bit of family lore behind tuna casserole too.
*meals* not “mails. Stupid autocorrect.
DeleteIt was annoying to not see options before essentially setting up an account. You can't beat a good tuna noodle hot dish, as we call them.
DeleteWe tried Everyplate and Hello Fresh. I have the same impression as you do, but 4 years later we still make Sausage and Pepper Penne at least once a month.
ReplyDeleteI had to doctor it up with more seasoning but I liked that one, the taste I managed to try.
DeleteI considered Hello Fresh too but decided against it. And then just yesterday I saw a Youtube evaluation of it and it wasn't good at all, so I'm glad I didn't bother!
DeleteI think we all look for things that will help simplify and give variety. But not all will be a win.
DeleteGlad you went for a spin so you could decide for yourself, the value of it.
ReplyDeleteI have a sister who hates to cook and her husband was a great cook and died far too young 19y ago. She had to figure out how to feed herself at home and still hates to cook. She now uses HelloFresh 2-3 per week because she likes the no-thinking and explicit instructions and each one gives her 2 meals, as you describe. I think she's nuts to pay the price but it's not my wallet. I was visiting her upon receipt of one box. The packaging was outrageous just as you describe.
Best of luck finding your way to a happy palette and tummy :-)
If I hated shopping ( we'll I do but don't need to do a lot) and would otherwise eat out or get takeout, I'd see the benefit. I see how young urban people without cars might really like them. That's not me if course.
DeleteWell done for trying - friends of mine use the trials when they are feeling stuck in a food rut - it’s a good way ( and not too expensive on a trial ) to mix things up about .
ReplyDeleteI adore Caramelised Onion , particularly when pared with goats cheese

Ohh now that's a delicious combination I need to try.
DeleteThank you for your review. New York times had a review of a few different services, and the packaging was also a big issue. I probably won't try one out. I'd like to control portion sizes, but also get a break from the actual meal prep work - which these don't provide. Still, it sounds interesting and so I'll see what deals are out there.
ReplyDeleteThe recipes were easy though, but yes, still chopping vegetables.
DeleteI enjoyed reading your review, Sam. I tried them at one time too, but they were not my cup of tea either. I can see them working for some people though.
ReplyDeleteLike most things, there's a market they work for.
DeleteWe have two meal kit subscriptions and we are pleased with them. Mostly because there is no waste and it is good portion control.
ReplyDeleteI do like the portion control aspect. I definitely think they have their place in some kitchens.
DeleteLike you, I think this is a good solution for people who just have no time to cook or limited kitchen expertise. Its simpler nowadays to acquire groceries and throw together easy meals. A lot of grocery stores sell the prepped ingredients. I haven't been a big fan of cooking lately, but I think its more cost effective and just as easy to do it yourself.
ReplyDeleteI chalk the win as getting a few new to me ideas.
DeleteWhere did my comment go?
ReplyDeleteI don't know. I'll check spam.
DeleteYou had a comment on meal kits on my Friday Fiscal Wellness post about meal kits. Maybe that's the one you were thinking of?
