New Life This and That
Figuring out a new schedule aside, there been other changes to manage. I'm adjusting to the hearing aids. It feels like I have an earful of wax at all times, and there's a scratchy sound. I understand both improve in time and it takes 4-6 weeks for wearing them to feel normal. Answering my phone through my ear is kind of funny. I have a high eye lens prescription, a new knee, and now blue tooth ears. I'm a bit of a bionic woman. Kidding aside, these technologies and options to improve my life are amazing. As much as each change has taken adjustment, it truly is a gift that I have access.
Two Fridays in a row I've had alerts that there is an urgent need for substitute teachers in the district. I want to wait until the week of the 28th to pick up a session, but if I am legitimately free, I think I'll opt into the next alert request. Knowing that I likely can work as much as I want, work the day and leave it behind, gives me some peace of mind in these unsettling financial times. Summer of course when school is out will be different, but I'm looking at a couple part day, part week, summer session options. Not sold I want to work at all though in the summer.
On the home project list, I'm gearing up to get the kitchen table repainted where it was worn tomorrow if it ends up being a rainy day. I could have the window open and there was no big dog around. I will have to put chairs around to try and keep the kitten away. This will be a free project as I had meant to do this last year, no 18 months ago but didn't get around to it. My husband had gotten a $10 off anything for a local hardware store after his death. I used the coupon to buy a paint pot of brown acrylic paint and foam brushes back in August of 2023. This was a table and chairs set that came as part of a starter furniture package bought in 1992, couch, love seat, coffee, and end tables, plus the kitchen table and four chairs. It was from Slumberland and I bet we paid about $1,000 for the whole lot if you can imagine. The couches and living room tables stayed until 2007, then found a new home as we gave away and bought the set I'm using still. It was the farmhouse style, with the white and wood grain. Six years ago I painted the legs black and top brown to update it after we bought the stainless appliances and the gray tiled flooring. The table is sturdy and has a lot of life left in it.
I'm trying to figure out what color I'd like to paint the desk that will go in my office. I'd like to reuse the same quilt that was my younger daughters years ago on the day bed, but not sure if that is motivation in picking color. It has purplish tones with cream. I found this desk online and while different, it has similar lines and style, and I love the teal color. Not really a match with the teal but there's no rules to follow and I don't need matchy rooms. I love the idea of finding a cool picture or mirror frame and putting cork backing instead for a bulletin board.
Then I found this desk chair on a search (not sure where to buy) that might go on my want list, but I can't really find a color that goes with the teal. Nothing is a priority-I can put any chair there temporarily, so not going to spend money on anything I don't love. I'm in no hurry to spend money on non-necessities (other than travel and to me, that is a priority). I'm taking on a make do with what I have attitude. It doesn't hurt to look and get ideas. Who knows if something that works and I like comes across my path.
My brother's fighting but we fear it's getting harder with each week. Where his first sessions of the infusions seemed to perk him up, the latest chemo has made him lethargic. Then another kidney issue put him back in the hospital. We're so thankful my other brother came north specifically to be of assistance. He and a brother in law assist with all the transportation to the clinic and now hospital. The sick brother seems to tolerate their method, where he gets cranky at his wife, daughter's, and sister's. This all happened just the past few days, when I thought I'd be of more help to my SIL.
I'm going to pick up free bricks this morning and get to Menards for some top soil and a few needed garden tools. I'll wait to hear if he'll come home or stays in the hospital longer, but either way I'll visit later, if wanted, or minimally help SIL as needed. I spoke to my MIL and she updated me on her brother. He too is suffering from cancer and also had recent falls causing neck and back damage. He's out of state and has two daughters near, but is in a care facility while he recovers from falls. Aging and being so ill is cruel.
I started out this post on a productive and positive note, and sorry I went sad. But, I guess it's evidence that I need to try harder to make a decent life for however many years I have. I've the gift of time right now for my yard, my house, and my family. I best not squander it.
My neighbor has the most beautiful teal front door, and their house is yellow! Black and teal? Taupe? Navy blue? Lots of complementary colors.
ReplyDeleteSending prayers for your brother and his family.
Interesting colors together. I'd like to stay with color but not ruling out. Thanks for the prayers.
DeleteYou're very wise to take your time... and how fortunate to be able to pick up a few days work here and there. Sorry to hear of hard times with illness in the family.
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry n no hurry. My body will limit all I can accomplish.
DeleteYou are the Bionic Woman, I always say I am with my hip, too!
ReplyDeleteWe call substitute teacher "supply teaching" in the UK, several of my retired friends do this along with exam invigilation) and the money is really good, it pays for some great holidays!
That chair is gorgeous, I'd love that! In our house the rule is if we love it, it'll go - the more colour, print and craziness the better!
Sorry about your brother and your Mother-in-Law's brother. xxx
I'd like more color but I also need calm rooms. I'm trying to do everything budget friendly so will embrace the encouragement to use the the quilt regardless of the desk color.
DeleteI'm sorry for the ill health plaguing your family. I know from dealing with my mum that getting old and sick is difficult for the person, and their family.
ReplyDeleteMy daughter had teal and purple as her wedding colours; along with the neutral of her dress and the men's suits, it looked amazing. Good luck with your projects. I'm currently finishing off some curtains I've made from a duvet cover.
I'd have never thought of teal and purple together. You're all making me feel endless options will work.
DeleteI love the teal desk and the white and teal chair is so pretty. Sending good thoughts for your brother and your MIL’s brother too.
ReplyDeleteThat particular set up is stunning isn't it? I love the bulletin board too.
DeleteThe desk and chair are beautiful! Happy Retirement!!!! Cindy in the South
ReplyDeleteYes, wish they were mine.
DeleteI love teal; it is quite cheering.
ReplyDeleteI think so too. My daughter's house has a lot of teal. It's a light and cherry space.
DeleteThe teal is great. Makes me smile.
ReplyDeleteThe family news on cancer fronts is hard. I have a close friend whose Husband is being tested for what may well be a blood cancer of some sort (they are still sorting things out) and I told her that with cancer there is that sense of sitting in the waiting room of a bus depot, wondering which bus you are getting on and what door you take to get to that bus. Not easy. Thinking of you, Sam.
It seems both are just having pain and infections managed, but no long term rebound expected. That is hard to know. My brother is 77 and the uncle is 80.
DeleteHi, Straitlover/Lisa here. Don;t think I've ever posted, but I do read all the time. Congrats on your retirement. I did a Google lens search on the chair pic. The exact chair pic came from a Made in China website that says out of stock, but a similar one (base is a slightly different color) is on the big A website: https://www.amazon.com/Ergonomic-Office-Adjustable-Bedroom-Computer/dp/B0CKQXK4BX. Of course, it's from China, too, so who knows if the price will change because of the tariffs or what.
ReplyDeleteRe your sleeping issues: my dietician told me it was OK to add magnesium glycinate to my 5mg melatonin.
Thanks for doing my that. It'll be on my list, but keeping ey s open for a lower cost or maybe thrifted option. I have a full check up coming up and will ask.
DeleteI love that colour. You have a lot of time to make these decisions which is good. Thinking of you as your family deals with some difficult times ahead.
ReplyDeleteNothing has to be finalized. I have so much purging to get done too, so all in good time.
DeleteI'm excited for your new hearing aids, SAM. I've worn them since I was 8 years old (so a bit over 50 years!) and they are my lifeline. My loss is pretty severe - I always say I'm "as deaf as a doorknob" without them! (and sleep like a rock! ha!) They do take some time to get use to - start with the volume a bit lower until you adjust. Wear them daily - all day. This will give you the best shot of adapting to them well. They have come so far with them since I started wearing them. I now wear the small ones that go in the ear (no blue-tooth) - and do well between them & reading lips (of course masks during COVID were a nightmare for people like me!). I hate to talk on the phone - so wasn't something I was interested in - prefer to do my communicating via text or email. I can use the phone if needed with headphones or through my car speakers (which I find probably the best way). But glad for you that you have that ability to talk on phone through them! Truly amazing technology!
ReplyDeleteAnyways - I'll be reading to see how you do with them!
I just took a class on using chalk paint - I'm now searching for a small-ish piece of furniture I can try this new technique out on! Love those teal color chairs! Maybe I'll do that color of paint for my first project!
Have a great first full week of retirement next week!
SZQ
Hi SZQ, it's weird that you mention chalk paint (and that Sam mentions repainting her table). When I first retired covid hit and I had so many ideas for buying old furniture and doing it up. Never did any of it of course, but just last night I decided I'm going to get some chalk paint and do up a very old piece of furniture in the living room that I inherited from this house's previous owners (only took me 34 years)! It does look lovely though doesn't it!
DeleteI have gray chalk paint still us d for my lower bathroom mirror, then used in house letters (I put a coat of poly over) The hearing aids are taking some better ng used to. I feel like they are helping. Easter should be a good test.
DeleteI'm so sorry to hear about your brother. It must be a terrible worry
ReplyDeleteYou do sound like the bionic woman but it's good that you can get these things to make life a lot better. I really need to get moving on some decorating. I hate doing it though.
I'm not good at decorating either. I am hoping mostly for calm, useful spaces without breaking my bank.
DeleteSending good thoughts on your brother. Very glad you have your older brother there as well to help out. We have a teal colored front door (similar to that color) & the rest of our house is a deep gray color. Could that be an option? I love the distressed dark gray + teal. Here's an example - https://www.amazon.com/Progressive-International-Rectangular-Counter-Distressed/dp/B06XS3VN17?gQT=1 (not a referral link)
ReplyDeleteoops, that was me.- Hawaii Planner
DeleteMaybe an option. I don't want to spend much so will take my time. Since I'm not working the office can be an evolving activity.
DeleteI'm so glad that work seems to be available to you if you want it. It must be very reassuring! And I'm sending you much love regarding your brother. It must be so hard for you all, but I'm so very very glad your other siblings are there to help!
ReplyDeleteIt sure will help ease my travel budget- the trips already committed to. I'm fortunate to have such a large family and my brother from Florida is retired, but very healthy so a huge help to my brother.
DeleteThat color is gorgeous!
