Kitchen (not mine) Garden

   


       Despite my garden bust, I'm enjoying the fruits of others labor.  I made two farmers market visits last week and have been devouring beans, peppers, tomatoes, and cucumbers, gave much to my kids, and brought along to a cookout. I even managed to get a couple jars of refrigerator pickles made, and plan to do more before the local cukes are gone. I don't seal these, but they're still good for several weeks since they're packed in vinegar. I can't share the recipe as it took decades before my MIL shared with me, probably after she no longer wanted to make herself. I found several similar on line, but they won't have the little side notes my MIL made as adjustments to family taste.

     My daughter brought me the gorgeous local sunflowers. Even those didn't come back this year. I'll try again next year. These are my favorite pickles on sandwiches and are particularly good on the Aldi red bag chicken. I haven't bought those for over a year but maybe while pickle season. 

Update: Oh my goodness, look what decided to grow? I pretty much ignored the garden bed since last Thursday when I gave up the hope of anything growing.  Now, its not going to be much to blanch and freeze, but perhaps a meal for a couple people. I'm still getting a bit of tomatoes too. I know Elle gave me a suggestion that might extend the bounty,  but I'd need a lot more soil.

    I didn't have much luck with tomatoes this year but the few I got I decided to turn into (very) garlicy tomato sauce to make lasagna tonight. I always say I'll do "better" next year but so far I'm still flailing around wasing most of my time! Aren't farmers' markets a pleasure though!

      I've been earing the few I get fresh. There's one FM stall I head to right away. Great quality and more than reasonable prices.

    Our regular tomatoes are have a lackluster season, but I have cherry tomatoes coming our my ears now. Now I have to figure out how to use them

      If they're like the ones my daughter grew, Id jgst freeze and pull out in the dark of winter for sauce. Im garden prep lazy that way.

      N ow a big life update and another explanation for my blog absence. I toured a few homes with my son in mid April. He wanted me with as he's not really lived in Minnesota (before coming back) since he was 19 and he's never owned a home. After a winter of snow, a spring so far of cold, and rain, and employment opportunities that require flexibility, he shifted his search to low maintenance living.       He almost put an offer on a beautiful condo with all his buttons checked just across the main road from my neighborhood. He paused though, realizing he doesn't want to settle down in our town but rather move to one of the twin cities. I'm much less familiar with Minneapolis but aware areas he'd probably like were a tad out of his pric e point. I know St Paul pretty well so was of more help. Testing the Waters

        I've missed blogging. I blogged for nearly nine years in a previous iteration. It was a daily ritual during the long hiatus from regular life that the Covid pandemic created. Even as the world, my world, opened up again, the clicking away on my phone or computer keyboard, reading comments if something I said had any resonance, and reading and commenting on other blogs in return became my morning norm. Life sure is unpredictable. A year ago, just after Christmas, I had read of the tragic loss of my blogger friend's husband who passed away on Christmas morning, then read one of her readers lost her husband the same week. Never would I imagine just a few weeks later would I be joining that unasked for club, faced with my own widow story. But there it is. I've had to try and figure out life in this unplanned and foreign place. I'm not a young widow, having raised and launched three children, but at now 58, feel too young to be thought of in the same space as my 8...
