Fun Book Club Idea

My mom's book club is made up of very busy women, present company excluded. We've had to pivot and adapt on dates and by our June meeting, we'll have read eight books. We'll skip July and August. S, our fearless coordinator and probably the busiest, had a fun idea to cap off the year. We each picked a book and will bring a food or beverage featured in the book. She's doing string cheese and complimentary bites to represent The Measure. M picked Dear Mrs. Bird but didn't say what she'd bring.

P hopped on Something from Tiffany's right away and not to give away the book too much, is going to bringing sweet rolls. I'm stretching a bit, but selected the Venice set book, The Instrumentalist, which did reference the fruit and veg markets so I'm bringing a fruit platter. There's two other regular attendees and three sporadic joiners so we'll see what else might surface.

June is Warrior Girl Unearthed. I haven't started it yet but am looking forward to it as we read The Firekeeper's Daughter a few years back also by  Angelline Boulley. We'll put together the book selection roster and calendar at the June meet up as well. We decided this year that we want to aim for at least two nonfiction books. Any recommendations? What are your book clubs reading? Do you pause in the summer?

  1. Ooh this is a great idea. One of our next book club reads is Wild Dark Shore. Before that, I read the Thousand Crime of Ming Tsu, and How to Read a Book. Nothing similar about any of them! On the next meetup for the ladies book club, we will get the book list for the second half of the year.

    1. We had a bit of music themed but loosely and not intentional. I don't think I'd have naturally picked up most books on our read list so a good plan to branch out.

    1. We normally just have light nibbles, not a good focused club so a fun change.

  4. I'm currently reading Ken Follet's Lie Down With Lions, which is set in Afghanistan. Not sure what food I'd bring in connection with that. But I'm also listening to Patrick Stewart's autobiography so baked potatoes would seem pretty easy there! I love the idea though!

    1. Ooh, some waffke fries for baked potatoes! You'd have to get creative with the lion's book as I'm being...loose connection at best.

  5. I have a friend who is active in a book club and they seem to go back and forth on whether to take the summer off. I think this year is an "on" year. I don't participate in book clubs; I love reading, I love talking about books, but I just never quite fit the dynamics of being "in the club" when I have been in one.

    1. Our moms club one is very loose and has no dynamics. Three people I'd never met, not part of the original "Mom's of Teens and Tweens" from which the bookclub was a Covid era offshoot, have joined last year as they knew someone and wanted a place to discuss books. Others migrate on and out based on life. There's really only a core of four that have been consistent through the years, and of course our own travel, life needs, means we're not there every month. Maybe a library hosted one would be a fit. My other book club if you call it that, is family. Basically, we all just talked a pit books so much, we decided it woukd be fun to read the same one once a month and chat. My oldest sister never reads but joins the discussion anyway, after a quick recap. She just enjoys the conversation

    2. I tend not to fit because I don't automatically agree that the choices were wonderful, whatever. The last time I set foot in a true book club to which I belonged, the book was "The Help" and other members did not appreciate my take on it (they all gushed). So I'm a club of one; I discuss books with friends, with my sons, but no clubs!

  6. It sounds like your book club is wonderful. I was in a club years ago but it folded and I haven't found another as of yet. I need to look for one to join.

    God bless.

  7. That's a great idea. We do a mixed up book club a few times a year (like right before Christmas.) We have picked a author and all read one of their books and then gave a review. We also picked a decade 1910's and each book had to be in that decade.

  8. That sounds like so much fun. One of Bailey's book clubs does that too. Like the cookbook club, they read the book and everyone brings a dish from a recipe in the book. Such fun!

  9. I’m in 3 book clubs (one is actually a Meetup group which pairs books with a themed outing). In my two local friend book clubs , we are reading Eddie Winston is Looking For Love (about a 90 year old who has never been kissed and the 23 year old who befriends him) and A Marriage at Sea. I recommended Eddie Winston and am getting raves from my friends who have read it so far. A Marriage at Sea gets good reviews., Your book club sounds like my long time one-core originals and others who have floated in and out, That group occasionally goes to a movie together (someone will text and ask if anyone is interested in a particular film). I’m planning a theatre day trip to NYC for those who are interested. We also have an annual beach day and lake day hosted by members who have primary or second homes near bodies of water..

  10. That sounds like Cook the Books Club online. They read the books and then make a recipe. It's fun to take part and see what everyone else makes too. Plus I usually love all of their choices in books.

  11. I love this idea! My club usually meets at a cafe once a month, this month we read The Nightingale which is quite a heavy read. Could easily bring soup/bread from that book however!

    1. I tried to get a book club going the years before Covid, but it was a little attendance flaky. Covid had it fizzle as we met in local bar/ restaurant.

  12. I love reading but I'm not a social person so not in a book club.

    1. There's online ones that I think get discussion so might be good option. My dsughter likes YouTube Bookclubs, where they go live and your only as present as you choose in the chat.
