Goals to Be Content in 2026

A reminder of the past year and that I want travel to be part of 2026.

Happy New Years Eve. Will you be out celebrating? I'm still on the fence about my plans. I've been invited to a sisters and if I go, I plan to be home well before midnight and greet the new year in bed. I've still got a bit of the seasonal mood malaise. Earlier, I hit publish on my fiscal list. Money is not life but let's face it, it's a tool to help enjoy the good things in life and I can't say the cost of living isn't bothering me. A couple recent medical/ dental frustrations really put me in a down mood right before Christmas.

I eventually come out of my self-pity episodes; I know I need to control the story, take charge, and not just wallow. I don't like that I'll likely have new prescriptions or that my lazy habits and genetics took a toll on my mouth. But I'm getting both dealt with, and perhaps these are the shakes I need to take better care in all parts of my life. So, here's my goals to improve or at least sustain the quality of life in 2026.

Personal healthcare

  • Schedule the regular lab checks that I was delinquent on since my knee replacement follow-up
  • Schedule mammogram
  • Develop some sort of regular exercise routine. They say it takes 21 days for habits to because the norm. Walking the dogs is not enough.
  • Reduce sugar and salt intake, which by default should be an improved diet
  • Lose the weight I put back on between late spring and fall. While more would be better, I'll start there as a goal.

Social Battery/Connectedness

  • Schedule one outing with a friend monthly
  • Schedule one group outing with friends quarterly
  • Play trivia at least 1X per month
  • Assess my charitable giving and include at least one active volunteer engagement
  • Decrease social media consumption, specifically Facebook. The forced antagonistic feeds suck energy away. I'll limit use of it for true friend and family connections. I'll still choose blogs, YouTube, and Instagram accounts that feel wholesome, uplifting, learning/ informative and creative and delete those that really are or have become just to sell.
Mind/ Skill Development
  • Take at least 2 adult education classes
  • Attend at least 2 lectures/ speaking events outside of the regular AAUW meetings
  • Continue book clubs and aim to read 25 books in 2026
Travel
  • Research and develop budget for another international trip for either fall 2026 or spring 2027
  • Plan and take at least one road trip of at least 2 nights, not including any cabin overnights.
  • Stay with pup and bring a friend or sister with at either cabin mid-week, maybe do this a few times

Family Relations

  • Schedule one family dinner per month, at my house as opposed to a restaurant (Better financially plus more relaxing)
  • Host family book club twice
  • Join family lunch group (cousins included) 6-8 times
  • See MIL outside of full family at least every other month
  • Four or more cabin day trips when extended family is also there

Home Management

  • Purge office closet
  • Work with daughter to purge her old bedroom; update to a guest bedroom or possibly more of a den with a sofa bed
  • Simplify front porch area for a relaxing morning spot
  • Organize and purge garage, yet again
  • Purge 100 items per month ongoing, no matter what type of object, until I feel I've got the free and uncluttered spaces I want. This feels like it may take years.
  • Purge, clean, and update entry hallway and filter area to both be more attractive and more  functional instead of the dump and collect tragedy it's become
  • Purge and sort pantry shelves twice a year
  • Purge and deep clean refrigerator, freezer, and chest freezer monthly
  • Deep steam clean living room furniture. The pets have taken a toll on it, but it's still in good condition and I don't want to spend money on replacing for a while despite it being nearly 20 years old.
  • Make a list and then get through the various dings and repairs needed.

I'd like to do quarterly check-ins on these, perhaps the last Saturday of each quarter. I know it is a long list. It seems I do this every year and don't make much progress. I'm trying and I guess that's a start.

  1. This is a fantastic list of goals! There are some very tangible specifics that should kick you off with your organizing & purging, some fun social goals with friends, and some fitness ones that look similar to mine. Looking forward to following along with you! - Hawaii Planner

    1. All should be doable/ tangible as these are things other grownups just do as part of living their life. I get in ruts in every part of my life and things need accountability - I need accountability.

  2. That really is a good list. It's inspired me to make one too. Have a lovely evening and a wonderful 2026

  3. This is an amazing list and you have 12 months to carry it out, so don't stress a time limit. Some things will take you very little time (mammo) others a bit longer (purging and organizing). Its a journey, after all. Let's get going!

    1. I'll look at the start of the month. This month is medical, by force, and the closet situations.

  6. I am not there yet, but vague ideas of how I want to proceed with the New Year are starting to form.
On an unrelated note, has ANYONE heard from or about Linda at “More Parsimony?” The last post she wrote was about pizza for Thanksgiving, and she hasn’t been commenting on other blogs. It’s rather concerning given her health issues.

    1. I have not seen her post anywhere. I was hoping a blogger might have her number and could call her. I do not know her or Tommy’s names, other than as Linda and Tommy. I believe she lives about two hours from me. Hope she is ok. Cindy in the South

    2. I was looking through my emails as I once sent her a Christmas card as part of Anne's Christmas card exchange but I couldn't find it. I know Anne (in the Kitchen) knows her last name. I'll look again though!

    3. I've seen nor heard a thing from or comment from Linda. I did have her last name and found nothing there either. Yo Meg, in your own time. My plan is quite vague without the how anything will get done. It's early days still for you.

  9. what a comprehensive list! I am going to steal some of it for myself. I have found it so easy to drift along in retirement, and not set goals like I used to when working.

  12. If you're ready to read, "Atomic Habits" is a great book and methodology for change. Very small changes pile up over time. 4y ago (after knee #2) I walked 1.2 million steps. 2025? 4.8 million steps, nearly 2200 miles! I would never have dreamed this was possible for me.

Wishing you the 2026 you have decided to achieve :-)

    1. I agree, Elle. Atomic Habits is such an amazing read, and I learned so much, and have begun to implement some of it in my own life.

    2. I appreciate the suggestion but at the risk of sounding like a snot, I just cannot do self help books. I'm glad others find things like that beneficial. I might just have a chip on my shoulder but they feel like another version of "you should do this, and you should do that ".

    3. I understand the "self help" sentiment. I feel like this book is different. It's a great guide on how to make achieving big goals in very small steps. I have always found big goals impossible. But broken into very small changes worked. 4 years and I increased my walking from 1500 steps to 13,000 steps daily. Tiny dietary changes alongside, and I'm down 73# and from size 20 to size 12. And that goal felt impossible as a chunk.

      Food for thought.

  13. I think there is learning that occurs during sadness, which can't be seen in the moment, of course. I listened to a podcast recently that explained that tears, that crying, releases positive endorphins, which I found both fascinating and yet, ironic.

Your plans for 2026 look like a terrific blend of mind, body, and spirit, plus a good dollop of productivity.

    1. There's different kinds of sadness, and sadness that lingers because the cause of the sadness keeps resurfacing and takes over my brain. I think I might need to pass on that podcast too. Not having a great start this New Years Day.
