Shopping for Myself
What a boring topic for a long winded post, and yet here I type. I am not a shop for entertainment person and never have been. My teen years were the glory days of the shopping mall rise. Some of my friends would have easily planted themselves at Burnsville Center or Maplewood Mall ( these are barely retail venues anymore- not much shopping there) all day, browsing, some buying, hanging at the food court stretching an over priced sofa and fries for an hour to people watch. That's the only reason I joined, and their company. None of us had a lot of money to spend, but my friends would bounce from store to store, trying things on, putting looks together, before making a few purchases. Even then, I was a practical shopper and my fashion sense was non-existent.
My older kids were very young when The Mall of America was built. That became their school shopping destination of choice. Before they drove, but when old enough (and fairly good with money), I'd turn them loose with each other and friends, their clothing allowance and general guide, and I'd find a place for coffee and my book. They'd check in, maybe drop bags off until we met for lunch, then maybe spend another hour or so before we headed to Target for the school supply side of their school start.
I remember my husband taking them one time with a friend each, thinking it would be a fun bonding experience. He must have gone on his day off when the toddler was at childcare. I remember having little sympathy and laughing when he described his day, especially about the bits with the girls, walking in and walking out without looking much, then coming back to the same stores to look at just two shirts for ages. I forgot to tell him about the vibe check. Before lingering in a store too long, they had to get a feel for it- that was the purpose of the walk in- walk out. They'd shop at the stores that passed.
Now, my son is very much a shop to replace person. My girls like the hunt of thrifting both for the economics and environmental factors, but also that they can put together a closet that fits their personality and style, not curated by a department store buyer. I still, even in thrift stores, shop with a specific need in mind. With more time in my hands, maybe I'll do more browsing just because I can.

Bristol forecast the day I leave for England. |
I decided though, in planning for three trips, I really do need a wardrobe refresh. Between losing then putting some pounds back on, many clothes feel shapeless and for someone else's body. My activities will vary over the next four months to include long flights, beaches and wineries, outdoor markets, arcades, and posh department stores, sight seeing and hikes in unknown terrain, swimming and boat rides, museums and theaters, sporting events, and lots of restaurants- and that's on all three! I want to look nice but also be comfortable. I need to be prepared for rain and cold, but also warmer than normal days, and downright heat in Florida potentially. When we were in the UK in March 2014, we experienced all, and had to make what we packed work. I can't buy new clothes for all three trips, so have to buy strategically to supplement what I've deemed will still work from what I own.

Weather in the Florida city for trip. |
I got a start last night by ordering things through Kohl's ship to store. I might not keep it all, particularly if I'm not happy with the fit. Three pairs of pull on pants, not leggings, with pockets, one pair cropped wide leg jeans, one patterned t-shirt, sweater tights, slip on no lace gray tennis shoes, and cropped pant pajamas should be here by Saturday. Once I decide what's kept, I'll actually go shopping Sunday to complete my purchases. Meet me at the mall anyone?
No chance your sisters have some swimsuits to borrow? My friend always lends me hers if I ask! Otherwise, it is tough getting so many different outfits together - I live in bodysuits but I understand that's not everyone's cup of tea! I hope you have some fun with it while getting all the clothes together. I would honestly shop with you at the mall Sunday in a heartbeat!
ReplyDeleteI'm good with swimsuits. I have three relatively new, and at least two backups. It's more a mix of clothes that will do duty in different weather and activities I'm in need of.
DeleteI had good luck getting this capsule work travel wardrobe together. (When I start going to the office in a month or so, the vibe in the office nearish me is decidedly tech casual, and I can wear all of my regular stuff.) I shopped at Banana Republic (regular & outlet) Ann Taylor (and Loft) & a few items from Nordstrom. I'm pretty picky & tend to return almost everything I buy. I know this is not the most environmentally conscious, and where possible, I do try to go to the stores to try things on, to avoid the unnecessary shipping back & forth. It is hard when so many bricks & mortar retailers are not around. I'm heading to see my sister + BFF in a few weeks, and we've added a shopping day (which we probably haven't done in 10+ years), because we all have a few trips coming up & expressed similar feelings about not having clothes that fit properly or match the styles we would like. We'll see what we net out with. - Hawaii Planner
ReplyDeleteI guess capsule wardrobe is sort of what I'm aiming for. I need pants that can be comfortable for a good long hike and nice enough that with different shoes and top, can work at a museum. I want at least one good skirt I can dress up or down. The gray shoes were to help bridge.
DeleteI feel ya girl! I detest shopping and clothes and often look like afrump in sweats, huge tshirts or jeans. Best of luck with online choices! I'm out West and sending you my moral support :-)
ReplyDeleteI'm truly comfortable in sports wear, so aiming for that comfort but with at least a touch of dress up Ability. I hope the pants work as they show on the model.
DeleteWe grew up in a small city, and didn’t have a mall nearby. It was downtown (walking distance) or do without. Somehow the malls still destroyed our downtown, though. When the mall finally came to our county, (late 1980’s, after u had graduated from
ReplyDeletecollege and moved out) it was closing as soon as it opened.
As a mother of littles in winters, cold New England, and then brutal summers in the southwest , I confess to enjoying pushing the baby carriage around the mall. I agree THP…get a capsule wardrobe based on your personal style. My mother used to say “wear whatever you are comfortable in.” I used to think she meant physically comfortable, but what she really meant was stylistically for the event. My personal style is typically long denim skirts and sandals in the warm weather, knee length denim skirts with boots in the cooler weather. Fancier events are black skirts or a black dress changed up with different types of wraps (sweater, blazer, lace shrug, etc.) My slim wardrobe is mostly curated from thrift shops. Comfortable shoes are a must, and I will spare no expense on those, though. That is where my shopping for attire time goes, because you have to try on shoes.
FYI, I am starting to see clear to envisioning travel in the future. You have inspired me.

(That should read after *I* had graduated from college, but I do believe we are very close in age!)
DeleteOur malls came in the late 70's early 80's. Yes, I'm going for the HP capsule version. I'll bring a few scarves and definitely a black sweater that can be paired easily up or down.
DeleteIt's been a couple of years since I've been to our Kohls because the quality of their clothes has gone done with the prices having gone up. I prefer Macy's. Around the same price range but much better quality. If you have one close by you may want to check them out.
ReplyDeleteNo Macys for ship to store any more. I too haven't bought much recently at Kohl's. I hope my minimal buys are basic enough that they'll work for years. Since I don't need to wear regularly, they should last.
DeleteI can really relate to your approach, shopping with a purpose rather than wandering endlessly really resonates with me. It’s great that you’re thinking ahead about comfort, style, and practicality all at once.
ReplyDeleteI'd rather not buy what seems like fast fashion but knowing I'll wear things for years helps a bit.
DeleteI hate shopping and buy on demand only. I own too many clothes but it is mostly because I buy them and wear them forever. I have added a few pieces this fall and will "retire" some of the items I have worn for 10+ years. I am not very trendy so things I have do not really go in or out of style, but I am just tired of some of them.
ReplyDeleteMy closet is stuffed too, but not the "right"things. This shop will help me purge.
DeleteI haven't been to a mall in years and only to Khol's once! Yep, not a big shopper - unless i can find it at a thrift shop. Good luck
ReplyDeleteMy daughter lives near the one mall other than MOA that still has actual stores so I go with her once a year or so.
DeleteFor all your travel, comfortable shoes are a must, and a few pairs to rotate.
ReplyDeleteI have my Sketcher slip ons and a great pair of boots, maybe a second. This show hopefully will be comfortable and step in for nice shoes since no laces.
DeleteI'm like you: even in my younger days, wayyyy younger, I would do almost anything to avoid going to a shopping mall. I just didn't like to shop, whether we are talking "shopping to buy" or just shopping for the "fun" of it. Fun? FUN? Oh, spare me!! Many decades later, I still feel that way!
ReplyDeleteToo many choices, too much cheap crap, and weird stuff. I'd live in jeans tshirts, flannel, and sweats and be happy.
DeleteI hate clothes shopping. I buy something and wear it to shreds. I'm still wearing 20+ year old clothes, looking pretty dowdy. In fashion and looking fresh? Heck no but I don't care! I even have a skirt that was my mother's, 1960s, I still wear. Things were made well back then. I hope you find what you're looking for.
ReplyDeleteWe are playing the same game. My changing size has added complexity to the comfort part, depending on the day.
DeleteI’m not a shopper for entertainment at a mall or department store either, but I do enjoy thrifting. Have you thought about the second hand market for your clothing needs? Sometimes I find some really neat styles second hand.
ReplyDeleteBecause I really want to pack easy, mix and match pieces, I made a list and just browsed and ordered. I have found a few favorites thrifting but right now, don't want to put the energy into the hunt.
DeleteI think most of us did our mall-hopping as teenage girls right? That was when I had the figure to look for lovely clothes and a little bit of money. Not any more, if I have to go to a mall I'm straight in and straight out. I do remember being in England one time and my brother offered to drive me into Poole (to look at clothes). Well he stood at the entrance to every shop with his arms folded so I kinda stood at the door, looked in and said "nope, that's fine"! I think we spent about 20 minutes "shopping" and that included getting a coffee. Never again - your poor husband, shopping with teenagers!
ReplyDeleteHe sure took one for the team. I knew enough to know, get my coffee and leave them to their process.
DeleteI absolutely hate shopping for fun. I don't find it fun. I do like a bargain though so I've been shopping thrift stores for different clothing items. There weren't any malls in England when I was a teen but there were a lot of shops in the town centre and we used to just walk through the town on a Saturday along with a lot of other teens. There always used to be someone walking with a boom box blasting music through the streets too.
ReplyDeleteI definitely make sure I have comfortable clothes for travelling on the planes in. Not too tight, not too loose. Lol. Good luck and have fun with the shopping! England will probably be quite chilly in November. If you're going near the coast it will be colder too.
Im trying to plan layers. I get hot very quickly- others will be cold and in sweaters and I'm in bare arms. We have several days in two coastal areas and of course Bristol is on the water I guess though not sure how inland I'll be. I'm just really excited but want to be prepared.
DeleteI hate shopping for clothes especially in malls. Dad loved it, Mother was okay. Hubby used to take his ex and their kids 4 times a year. He sat and people watched LOL.
ReplyDeleteThere were no shortage of places to sit with a cup of coffee and no shortage of people to watch.
