Sunday Thoughts- What Season Is It??

I can't tell anymore. The variety of sunflowers I planted in a pot the middle of May finally flowered. I've got new growth on my tomato and pepper plant. Temperatures were so high last week I turned the AC on again, and heard the neighbor kids splashing in their pool yesterday.  And, by 7:15 it's so dark I need my headlamp to walk the dog.

I picked the apples from the trees my daughter planted two years ago. We'd have had more but the storm in July caused damage and I lost a few branches. The shear weight of the apples probably didn't help either. Last year just one tiny apple grew.  I'll need her help figuring out where to prune and fingers crossed they survive the winter even though beat up. These are liberty apples. I wasn't familiar with them but Google says they are "fresh eating, with a crisp, sweet-tart flavor and firm texture, as well as for cooking and baking, retaining their shape in pies, muffins, and tarts". Cherie had a beautiful caramel apple tart in a post yesterday that I might attempt to recreate to bring to book club Saturday or Monday.

I still have not made any jam. Remember my July goals list? Fooled me or lied to myself. I promised my brother though I'd have cherry and raspberry done before he heads south again. Those are his preferred take home kinds since he says strawberry jam is easy to aquire, though wouldn't turn that down either if I got all three made. I don't know why I'm procrastinating so bad this year. I just opened the last of my "frankenberry", named by my son made from all the leftover bits of fruit. It was dated

I wonder if we'll have a mild winter like last year, or the never-ending, bitter cold one like a few years back? I hope for my kids sake, since they have to manage all things for me when I'm gone in November and March, winter is truly December-February. My rambling Sunday thoughts prove I've turned into my parents, dissecting the weather instead of just embracing it. It is quite an odd year though.

Comments

  1. I do the same thing, thinking about the weather. I am not a fan of the bitter cold and get worried thinking I will forget or not know to do something that gets the house ready. If Hubby were here, he would be prepared - Mr. Boy Scout. Your Frankenberry jam sounds like it was good - I would gladly eat it, I love mixed berry jam.

  2. Your sunflower and peppers are beautiful! That is a good harvest of apples, how neat. I'm laughing at your son's name for the Frankenberry jam. I saw a recipe recently for compost heap jelly which is just as you described, all the leftover bits of fruit. It's a terrific way to use up every little bit and not waste them.
