Sunday Thoughts August 3, 2025
It was a very quiet day, following a quiet weekend. I'm feeling left behind. I know I can always go to the lake, but I have to really gear myself up for that. I never know who and how many people will be there and more and more my in-laws families bring extra guests. Plus, after my last day bringing pup there without reinforcements, meaning my kids to keep his attention, he overdoes trying to go up the deck stairs and out on the dock following me everywhere. I think those things are what hurt him so bad heading into last weekend. I can't leave him unattended for more than 4 hours now as he'll have accidents.
Saturday was nice in that I had unexpected guests, twice. My youngest and two friends had planned to go tubing south of town, but learned the water was too high/ unsafe. They switched courses to getting something to eat and the beach. They used my fridge for their leftovers and stopped to see the pets before the beach. I invited them to for dinner and "orphan" cocktails, leftover beer, wines, and hard seltzers, when they came back for their lunch leftovers. I made a sort of taco bar and they hung out on the patio for a couple hours. Being young people, they had later plans and left about 8:00.
Earlier Saturday I mowed the front and side yard, but the air quality impacted me a bit. I did the back and weed whacked this morning. My daughter gave me a couple massive zucchini so I processed one Saturday and tried an improvised savory zucchini fritter/cakes and a loaf of zucchini almond bread. The bread turned out perfectly moist and delicious. The fritters spread out so much, like a burger pattie, but were delicious. I'd make the same way, but maybe I'll add a bit of corn starch so they hold their shape better, plus make smaller so they are more appetizer size.

I watched the 1st and 2nd Downton Abbey movies over the course of the evenings so am all caught up when the finale comes out in September. I won't do spoilers in case like me, it took you over 10 years to even start watching the series. It'll be interesting to see the great manor houses, properties and gardens, now owned by the National Trust, and really see the way the aristocracy lived. Hard to imagine that the family's job was to basically "be rich". Also, does anyone else find the whole valet and ladies maid, getting them dressed not just lazy, but creepy? Why would you want someone in your personal space, hearing and witnessing many of your most personal experiences? Why do married "ladies" not have their breakfast with the rest of the family but by room service? Good thing I was not a rich aristocrat in 1920.
I finally got a start today to getting the small dresser/night stand painted. Two coats, still drying, but I think it needs a gloss coat too as it's too dull. I also am going to look for new nobs. I'll wait to post a before and after unless it truly looks like crap once done, but I'll still use it. I just painted the existing chipped and boring ones but maybe I can find four vintage drawer pulls. It'll be a practical addition in my bedroom even if less pristine than I'd like. I've done so few of the organization tasks in my July goals list. Most are getting moved to August.
Other things I did instead of accomplishing tasks were chatting via WhatsApp with Siobhan and going on a YouTube tour of Salisbury, one of our side trips in November. I think we're putting together an impressive itinerary with plenty of slow time for me to just enjoy feeling like a local. Pup got a good play and I think I finally figured out what are weeds and what are plants in the squash and pumpkin patch so did some weeding. I'm finally seeing flowers and the start of something, but my guess is it's getting quite late in the year to hope for any successful vegetables. That's all for my weekend. I'll get grandpup in the morning.
I haven't seen the latest Downton Abbey movie either, but then I think the initial series was old news by the time I even started watching it. It was the same with the Sopranos. I watched it (and loved it) about 20 years after it came out. I'm not a royalist so yep, the idea of having someone "dress me" is beyond me. Same as thinking I'm going to bow to someone because of the accident of their birth. Mind you, I see Andrew Lownie's book "Entitled" about Prince Andrew is coming out next week so I've already ordered that on Audible. If anything would ever put you off royalty I'm pretty sure it'll be this book about him and his odious ex-wife, you know, the one who tried to sell access to Andrew to a fake Sheikh for £500,000!
ReplyDeleteThe next and last movie is scheduled for September. Anything Prince Andrew disgusts me. I do not know about the sale of access scandal. I'll look it up.
DeleteGoogle News of the World, fake Sheikh, Sarah Ferguson - they have it on video!
DeleteSometimes being bereaved can mean too much quiet time. I value the time we spend talking and am so looking forward to your visit
ReplyDeleteSiobhan x
My son ended up getting home earlier by about an hour so that was nice. I have a hard week ahead as you know.
DeleteI am drooling over your zucchini!!!!
ReplyDeleteMy daughter sure gets a bounty. I need to do a calorie calculation if the fritters.
DeleteDD left early Friday for DC and was gone all weekend until last evening. I started vacation Friday night. We went to Erie for the day Saturday and then got drinks and apps closer to home. Yesterday I went scorched earth on the house, weeded, swept both porches, reorganized under the bathroom sink, laundry, vacuumed. When I stalled out I lounged in the sun. Weather has been nice, a little cool for me personally but I think everyone else loves it. It’s just a sign of what’s to come and it makes me sad. Going to continue where I left off yesterday. I think I’m going to paint the front door, tackle a catch-all piece of furniture we have and get some groceries and household things. I’ve been replacing the annoying things around the house. Like the refillable k-cup I use that DH broke, kitchen tongs that don’t close right, stackable storage bins that kept collapsing on themselves. Trying to take away life’s little annoyances. JoAnn
ReplyDeleteI love that expression, scorched earth, for housework. I need to take a play from your book. Why do we keep things that create annoyances? It's a human mystery.
DeleteI'm glad you're including "downtime" to soak it all in while traveling. I often find the best experiences on those days. Sounds like a week of good choices to me:-)
ReplyDeleteThe next time I go to Paris and other parts of France I will slow down. We did not have enough cafe afternoons and those we did were wonderful. I'm remembering that for my upcoming trips.
DeleteTwo years ago my brother got married in France. (I am Canadian and his wife is from France.). My Mom and I spent two weeks in a small town about an hour from Paris. I think it was my favourite vacation ever. We were able to live like locals - walking to the market, the bakery etc. We were able to to take day trips other places by train, but the slow pace was lovely.
DeleteThat's a good idea to re-watched Downton Abbey again before the new additions to the series comes out. Those fritters really look good. I haven't had those in years.
ReplyDeleteI've been trying different ways to make them. The ninja blender made processing a breeze but they probably were wetter despite letting them sit for several hours to release water.
DeleteI love Downton Abby and am looking forward to the movie next month too. Have you watched The Guilded Age? It’s sort of similar and you might enjoy it too.
ReplyDeleteThe impromptu taco bar for the young adults sounds tasty and wonderful to spend some time with them.
I haven't seen The Guilded Age. I tried to start The Paradise but I'm a bit bored by it. It worked to have readily accessible ingredients on Saturday.
DeleteI love zucchini fritters & zucchini bread, so that sounds fabulous. I'm glad you got a chance to enjoy time with your DD's friends. Sounds lovely, and glad they made the choice not to risk dangerous waters. - Hawaii Planner
ReplyDeleteShe has some very nice friends and her roommate is fabulous. She was her first friend she met at college, outside of her freshman roommate. They stayed friends but different friend groups. It's always a treat to see them...brings back the old days.
DeleteIn thinking through your comment about downtime during travel - I think that we accomplish that by building in frequent coffee/beer/wine stops during our day's events. It's a nice way to stop, people watch, and just chill until we're ready to move on the next activity of our day.
ReplyDeleteI'm not 100% sure about Britain, but I know that mainland Europe cafes offer very petite glasses of beer and wine, and coffee tends to be modestly priced, so it's a very inexpensive, frugal way to enjoy simply sitting.
What a lovely trip it appears you will have with Siobhan!
My husband was amazed that beer and wine were the same or even less than a Coke in Europe. You've tapped to into my thoughts. On other trips we covered so much, but I don't know if we fully appreciated it all.
DeleteI watched the Downton Abbey series about 10 years ago and loved it. I'll have to find the movies to watch.
ReplyDeleteFirst movie was on Netflix and 2nd on Peacock, where I watched the series over the last many months. Maybe on other platforms too but might not be free.
DeleteYour zucchini treats look delicious. I have watched Downton on and off ( I thought it was Downtown for the longest LOL) I am back from vacation and off to work tomorrow, boo! But love to see your plans rolling along <3
ReplyDeleteTook me many months on and off to watch. I was thinking intrigued by the show, much like when ai watched the Crown.
DeleteDownton Abbey was one of my favorite shows. I would come from work and plop myself into my chair yelling "everyone shut UP!". Ha ha. Your zucchini fritters sound great!
ReplyDeleteThe fritters need tweaking but they were good. Some of the situations were just so ludicrous to me.
DeleteThis recipe is brillant when you've got a glut of courgettes - and taste exactly like the ones you'll be eating in Athens: https://eatingeuropean.com/kolokithokeftedes-greek-zucchini-fritters/
ReplyDeleteI've never watched Downton Abbey, I like my period dramas working class and gritty and with accents like mine - Peaky Blinders rocks!!!
The only way to travel is to live like a local any other way and you're just a tourist! xxx
The show also had depth of story with the servants and their lives too. I really hope I find the good places to just be in the places I visit.
DeleteSorry you were a feeling a little left behind ((()))
ReplyDeleteSounds like you had a busy weekend though. It's great that you're researching the area you are planning on visiting. Make sure you give yourself time to just sit in the gardens (there are always gardens somewhere lol) and enjoy the peace of the place and do a little people watching! One of the little things I miss about England is just having spaces where people sit, take a drink or a sandwich or something and just enjoy for a while or walk. Sometimes people are in such much of a rush!
I love planning before trips so YouTube is great fun that way.
DeleteI am sorry you are feeling a little behind, but I understand it. My sister is having some of the same feelings as she is trying to navigate her new normal
ReplyDeleteI know and I'm sure she knows I can pick up the phone and reach out, but it's not the same. I don't like feeling like I'm inserting myself in someone else's day.
DeleteSam, Kay here, Sissy feels like this a lot, but I think you are doing great for what it is worth. You are strong, powerful and beautiful! Remember that!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Kay. It's a tough week for me.
DeletePeople could not dress themselves because of back-fastening clothing. I remember the sixties with zippers in the back that needed someone to zip up. I would get ready to go out and have no one to zip me. I actually had to drive somewhere to get a friend to zip me. No, I never heard of the zipper pulls to help myself.
ReplyDeletePractical Parsimony above
DeleteSorry you were adrift. Grief isn’t linear. ‘Nuff said!
ReplyDeleteYour zucchini bread looks beautiful. Our vegetable garden was a flop. The corn looks okay, and the pumpkins have blossoms. And, of course, zucchini. The plants are slowly beginning to yield. I, however , can only bear zucchini in one of two forms; Baked into a zucchini bread, or turned into relish. As we are almost out of last year’s relish, I am happy to see we will have more zucchini. And, zucchini is forgiving, so unlike this year’s plums, if I don’t feel like processing the zucchini right away, it’s fine. In a pinch, I can grate it, put it in a Zip lo, and tuck it in the freezer, where it can stay until I feel like facing it!
-Meg B.
That's what I've done with the second large plant, got hot again so didn't want to turn oven on to bake. Do you like chili? We find sliced zucchini in chili adds no flavor but uos the volume. I do like it roasted or steamed with herbs though as a side dish so no problem eating lots of it. I appreciate the kind thoughts on grief.
