Friday Fiscal Wellness Check February 21, 2025
After today, six full weeks to retirement. Then, just two more work paychecks and I'll have nothing coming in until June 1, other than getting insurance reimbursed through my HSA for May. I'm trying not to obsess about my budget and cash flow, but the topic is there at all times swirling in my brain. It's a good motivator to keep track of where, what for, how much, and why I spend where I do.
Avoiding Spending/ Saving on Needs
- With my Internet two year promotion over, it was going to be even higher ( due to price changed, taxes, and other fees🤣ðŸ˜) than the jump to $95. I was able to get a better plan for $75 by contacting customer care. It's a two year rate and will save me $20 per month from what I had budgeted. Bonus, they have two years of Peacock. Even if We just use intermittently, that saves another $7.99 any month we would have used. I guess that's going to be the primary extra streaming for now.
- Groceries and household purchases were needs only. Still, I don't think I'll get my 20% budget savings, but will be satisfied with 10%. I'll try again next month.
- My daughter ended up only needing the procedure on lower gums, so saved $500. I'll take from the MDEA account, but glad to not deplete it since I'll want to apply some to my hearing aids.
- Kept heat low, used sweaters, slippers and blankets when sitting. I can't justify -0 to -19 outside, and cranking heat up inside.
- Used gas saving when filling up- stretched my tank to two full weeks, without driving on fumes.
- Thought hard about needs or "social needs" when using the $20 in Kohl's cash and found two sweatshirts that will be future birthday gifts for SIL's. Whop- fooled me. Wasn't good until the 18th, so might stop tonight before my bowling meetup, but it's good until March 2. They were still a very good price so will save $$ later.
- Happy hour meant Saturdays meet up with two sisters was about 30% less than dinner because of specials. Brought 1/2 my appetizer, buffalo rolls ( huge) home.
Opportunities to add Funds/Windfalls
- Added receipts to Fetch and played MS Rewards towards gift cards.
- Rolled the Max of 50 hours of vacation into my 401K
Then, there are often other things that impacted my check book that came up without much planning or notice, or an all out splurge.
- Splurged on a fancy brunch with my daughter, her last chewable meal for a week before another round of oral surgery. (I know it probably seems oxymoronic to splurge on an expensive brunch, then nickel and dime my HH&G spending, but it's how I'm balancing.)
Daily Dinner Diary ( just Friday, Feb 14 to yesterday, Thursday, February 20th)
- Fri - Leftovers
- Sat-I had happy hour food with my sisters. My son heated up soup and later my leftover appetizer when he got home from somewhere, so must have had food out too.
- Sun- Chicken, mashed potato and gravy, homemade bread, vegetables
- Mon- because I ate a big brunch, I just had leftover soup when I got home. No clue what my son ate.
- Tues -Home made Alfredo pizza with assorted veggies and dip as a salad ( no greens in the house)
- Wed- Baked breaded cod, cheesy hash browns and brown rice and mixed vegetables
- Thurs- Pork roast, mashed potatoes, steamed zucchini, with drop biscuits
Lunches were leftovers, Sandwiches, soup, veggies and dip, and tuna on crackers or in wraps. It's supposed to warm up. I'm bowling with church group tonight after the coordinator specially reached out to me, which was kind. I had fun last year so hope to enjoy the outing. I'm getting in a funk again. Well, not getting in one, already there. I'm hoping the weekend shakes it off a bit.
Looking back at my week, I’m shocked to realize I only spent $10 cash for a Galentine’s Bunco event with my mom friends that benefited a local women’s shelter. I haven’t bought groceries in ten days. Other than Bunco I haven’t even been anywhere but work. It’s cold, windy, snowy, germs everywhere. DD is home this weekend but since it’s her boyfriend’s birthday today and they have plans with his family I won’t even see her much. Heck, I even bought his gift weeks ago and sent it to school with her so he could open it this morning. I do have a bill to pay today and one to adjust, it’s an auto pay but the cost has gone up and I notice they didn’t change the amount they are taking out. I do need to get some loss leaders and some basics-shampoo, dish soap, rice. Nothing exciting. I’m managing to keep busy doing some spring cleaning, watching the Four Nations Faceoff and catching up on sleep lol. Does that count as a hobby? JoAnn
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely getting caught up on sleep helps. I didn't even think about staying home more to avoid germs, but I've been out and about a lot with daughter's stuff, church, a play but so far so good. We had our early impromptu moms meet up the Monday before Valentine's do I guess that was Galentine's for me.
DeleteI think it's perfectly fine to scrimp and save in some areas so you can do a splurge.
ReplyDeleteI agree with One Family. You decide how you balance or change your budget. God Bless. Sandie
DeleteOf course I can justify my spending, but I wanted to share my thinking. The quality time with my daughter was Worth mane eating an extra night of a basic pasta and another night of a simple rice dinner. Seems many of us think the same.
DeleteI'm with one family. Scrimping & saving in one area to afford a splurge is also how I think of our budget. It wasn't a great week at our house as well. I'm still so bummed we have ski passes we didn't use. We could *try* one more weekend, but that involves more out of pocket money for lodging, gas & food, so it kind of feels like throwing good money after bad? I can't decide. DS17's 18th birthday is coming up & he has a Monday off of school. We'd discussed allowing him to bring one friend for skiing, which would at least use up 1-2 days of our ski passes. Who knows if it will happen (very weather/schedule dependent.) - Hawaii Planner
ReplyDeleteI base my entire household budget on scrimping and saving in some areas to splurge in others. A budget is, above all, a hierarchy of priorities, in other words, scrimping and saving in some areas to splurge in others!!!
DeleteHope your funk passes. In my New England days, I found this time of year particularly challenging emotionally, even in the best of times. It was almost as if winter had set into my entire psyche.

Budget is definitely an art and a bit of science, or rather math equation. Plus, I found a lovely cafe I didn't know about near my daughter's house. Meg- yes, I'm so done with winter. It's been bleak.
DeleteAgree - we roll the same way. I'm always celebrating a rebate or a saved $ - because then splurging is justified (in my head!). Because life is meant to be LIVED! Love that you got to spend time with youngest daughter before her oral surgery ~ I'm sure she enjoyed it. Money well spent! Enjoy your weekend!
ReplyDeleteJuggle, balance, figure out how to stretch the paycheck, splurge, repeat.
DeleteOn the countdown! Exciting and scary, I'm sure. Looks like a good week financially, a balance of saves and spends. Well done! I've done fairly well this week, but that's only because I didn't go out much because of the horrible roads lol
