Friday Fiscal Wellness Check June 19, 2026

For my Friday posts, I copy a previous week, delete the old and update as I go along the week. This helps me add as the week goes on. Here's my recap of Friday, June 12 to Thursday, June 18. I just sort of list things as they come up, then edit before publishing. Good thing this week as I'm feeling all the side-effects from my second shingles vaccine.

Use it Up/Avoid Waste
  • Used lots of bits from past meals as toppings for a couple flatbread pizzas on pre-made crusts bought at $1 for two.
  • After we ate leftovers from previous nights meals, I made up and froze three small burritos with the tidbits of pork, rice, and beans with a bit of cheese. These are perfect lunch size for me for the coming weeks.
Avoiding Spending/Saving on needs
  •  Found four varieties of one pound bags of cheese curds for $3. These actually still were dated to the 22nd. So while I'll  freeze the bulk as thats a lot of cheese, much will be enjoyed fresh.
  • Win (and a not-see below), but used Kohl's coupons and clearance to buy two different baby girls gifts of clothes for future wear. One is for my nephew, and will give after she's born the end of summer, seperate from baby shower gift, and the other is for one of my mom's friends daughter, born on Sunday. I got both two,  3 piece Carter's outfits plus a sweet children's plate and cup for $54 and think I did pretty well.
  • This is an avoided spending for a little gift to myself. The T-Mobile Tuesday had a free print reward. I had a picture of the 5 of us, very casual as we like, taken when my son was home for youngests HS graduation party and night before my older daughter went to Iceland in June 2019. It popped up as a memory, very bittersweet, as taken on Fathers Day that year. I'll look for a frame but first want to decide where I'll put it.

Opportunities to add Funds/Windfalls

  • Entered receipts in Fetch, played MS Rewards, and a few surveys.
  • Did and opinion poll for a $2 cash reward. Ahh, the political season is in full bloom so I'll likely get one a month until November.
  • I also earned $10 in Kohls cash and $5 reward for pick up at store.

 Non-Thrifty or Frugal

  • I have a conflict for a baby shower for my nephews baby so just used the order/ship registry option. Baby stuff is expensive!

Then, there are often other things that impacted my check book that came up without much planning or notice, an extra optional or necessary expense, or an all-out splurge.

  • At the cheese store, they sell a lot of more local ( to the western Wisconsin/southeastern Minnesota) beers and wines. I was happy to see a 6 pack of Loon Juice Grow a Pear, Pear and Honeycrisp Cider. Loon Juice featured prominently on a sisters wine and beer trail trip and the pear variety is hard to come by. I brought to family book club.
  • It would have been rude not to stop when my son and I took a detour through St Paul's West Side at the Taco House. We love the main restsurant too, Boca Chica. If we didn’t have to get home to pup, I'd have wanted to do some shopping at El Burrito Mercado Marketplace. A little splurge by my son of just over $10 for two chicken taco burritos for a late lunch. I rode along as he brought more odds and ends to his place and got the mail.

Daily Dinner Diary (Friday 6/12  to Thursday, 6/18).

Fri -  Flat bread pizzaa (one- beef & mushroom bolognese,  sausage and cheddar cheese, two- ricotta and garlic, with onions, green olives, abd bits of pepper jack cheese)

Sat- Dinner at sisters, make your own pizza hotdish andcthese became so big so most of us took ours home.

Sun- Leftover hotdish from my sisters, picky bits found to eat a sort of picnic while reading outside

Mon- Picky bit and snacks at book club year end wrap up. (Made a pot of chicken wild rice soup too and will eat for lunches and freeze portions)

Tues- Pork Carnita, rice, black beans in burritos or bowls

Weds- Leftovers burrito bowls

Thur-  Leftover wild rice soup

My meals are really same old, same old and will be more so as cooking for just me will either yield a lot of leftovers ( though I'll save much as freezer meals to pass on to kids) or very simple food with little effort. I won't hit my low spend H&G target of 10% less, but 5% might still be doable. Coffee has exploded on price around here and I did have a few social things I purchased groceries for, including 2 bottles of wine and the noted cider above. For now, I'm putting those kind of purchases in with my H&G line, though I know most consider that recreation/ entertainment. How was your week?

  1. I have sworn off Kohl's forever after a bad experience in store. But I do own half a closet of clothes I bought there with sales, coupons, and Kohl's cash. Those were the days!

    1. Kohl's is not what it used to be, but for chikdtens/ babies they still have options. I'll probably use the Kohl's cash on something basic like socks.

  2. I think you did quite well this week! Contributing to social events and family milestones is clearly very important to your happiness and you found lovely, not bank-breaking ways to do that. What a great idea to print a photo from your year's past feed. It sounds lovely.

It was nuce to know that both were having girls and they likely won't interact so I just bought two of each outfit in sizec12 months so fir nect soring/summer and two of the plate and cup.

    1. One bag ( 12 oz.) I used to buy for $6.99 regular price, was on sale at $7.99 with new shelf price as $8.99. 30% increase on a month! Whike I bought a two pound bags of Cameron's for $21.99, thats still fine up $2 from last night but not quite as high so fast.

  4. It sounds like you had a good week, and the photo print is a lovely idea. I should do that. I know I have good pictures with my siblings and parents from years ago. My week has been horrifically expensive, due to massive electrical problems I ended up having most of my house rewired. Aargh! At least the dangerous old wires are gone and it's up to code. Hopefully I'll recoup a good bit of this expense when I sell in a few years.

    1. Electric problems are nothing to risk with DIY so happy you're all safe now.

  5. Oh, I remember that shingles booster well! It knocked both me and my spouse for a loop. We shivered all night as if we had a very bad case of the flu. Glad it's done, as I am sure you are now as well.

I do appreciate keeping flat bread pizza on hand in freezer as well, for the exact reason you use them for. They are great for using up odds and ends. Very forgiving!

Responding to your post from a plane via free wifi. Hope this becomes a thing, increasingly going forward. It does help pass the time as I can not relax enough when flying to read or watch TV or a movie.

    1. I supposedly have free wifi with Delta and T-Mobile but never quite got it usable. Those crusts are a help. I wish I'd bought a few more but not wanting to be greedy.

  6. Oh, the photo from the free print from T-Mobile sounds beautiful. I can see why it would be bittersweet.
You did a great job of not wasting food in your kitchen this week. Those pork burritos will be delicious, I’m sure. It’s too bad about the price of coffee. I don’t drink it, but have read that about the rising prices in several places,

  7. I got a 2.5pound bag of Kirkland French Roast for $22.99. I think it was $17.99 2 months ago. A girl needs her good coffee!

    1. I like Cameron's but there's a something Owl my grocery store has that's really good and often on sale but it exploded in price last week! I can't do Folgers or some of the other big can coffees. No flavor and they're just as much.

  8. I have never been to a baby shower so I have no experience with the price of baby stuff. Back in the Midwest I remember continually exchanging things with her friends and neighbors for the kids. Do people still do this?

On the Midwest but in the Deep South I have noticed lots of young mothers selling their kid’s clothing, as they outgrow them,
on Facebook. I will occasionally see on the Buy Nothing sites free kid toys but it seems most folks are trying to sell them. I think the economy is hitting very hard. Cindy in the South

    2. I think it's both passing on to family and friends and some selling, but I'm going by third hand experience at this point. I don't buy second hand for gifts but I've been a go between passing perfectly usable items from a nephew's wife on one side of the family to the niece on the other who has boys just younger. And yes, I agree totally with Cindy that young families are stretched.

  9. Not a bad week financially - well done!
Baby things are SO expensive. Luckily, daughter doesn't mind garage sale items for Baby A so a lot of her clothes are bought that way or given from a friend who has a daughter a bit older. Children grow so quickly it seems a bit silly to spend a lot of money on clothes!

    1. I think the initial gift giving frenzy for first baby relaxes into the practicality of buying good quality second hand items. There were things normally one might see on a registry that they might have got already second hand.

  10. Any week with savings is a good week! This year I have my sister and best friend having second babies, 2nd son and 2nd daughter respectively! So not too much new is needed,
