Experiences in Retirement
I'd have liked to have titled this, Adventures in Retirement, but that would be a stretch. Even in retirement life throws curve balls, but I'm rolling with them.
I was not expecting to be a caregiver for an aging dog with health needs that dictates my schedule. Other pets I've ever had clearly were in agony before assisting them to pass or died in their sleep. Pup, when awake, seems quite content, though often confused. He still likes though is very slow, his walks to the pond and park. The potty issues are tough. I'm trying doggie diaper bands. Fortunately it's just his bladder, and it's mostly that he's just not quick enough to alert us before too late. He clearly doesn't like having accidents as he howls for me when one happens. If I stay diligent during the day, use the bands overnight or if left alone, that hopefully solves the mess part. I'm also now one of those dog owners with a little stroller for him. This will solve the problem of him not being able to walk very far when I want long, brisk walks, or to take him along so he's not left alone so often or too long to outdoor events. I'm not complaining, but sharing the situation and how I'm trying to balance his needs in my life.

I'm doing a lot of other pet care. I mentioned my son left the cats with me until after labor day due to his summer schedule pulling him away multiple nights a week, particularly weekends. I've also had grandpup this whole weekend and will next weekend too. I'm rewarded in cuddles and extra ball play outside.

I was hoping to do more travel, but see above. It'll be hard to arrange care. He went downhill fast when I was in Greece, or as my son says, "went full on old man dog" that week. There's also the budget. Having $200 more a month in medicine takes a bite out of the fun money (even after finding lower costs with Chewy pharmacy). But, with the stroller, I feel more confident doing daytrips and even short distant overnights at dog friendly accommodations. I'm close to reserving a two night stay in Galena, Illinois after many recommendations for shortish driving getaways. I can book at a slightly higher rate with cancellation as late as four days ahead. I'd likely go Thursday-Saturday or Friday-Sunday to not interfere with my daughters schedule for her dog. I don't know why I'm hesitating as with gas, hotel (even with extra pet fee), and meals can do for about $400. I earn easily that much in cash rewards on my Visa in a year and theres a sizeable balance already.
I don't think I've ever made potato salad before. I had a large supply thanks to a loss leader and thought, why not try. I used this potato salad recipe because of the seemingly simplicity and that I had all ingredients on hand and seemed what I like best in the salad. I actually halved the recipe as I didn't want leftovers. It was, OK. Far easier to grab from the deli counter for the very occasional hankering.
I've been watching, or at least it's on while I'm doing other things, The World Cup. For the life of me though, I can't figure out if some of these men went to training camp or drama camp. The overreaction to bumps and trips is sometimes comical as they try to draw a penalty. I coached youth soccer with both my girls and they seemed to roll with the falls with more dignity and less exaggeration. It's been a fun tournament, though the US giving up the winning goal with seconds left the other night was very deflating.
We picked the next round of Mom's Book Club books. We tend to go September to June, but often have to stretch so might end up bumping a book. I've looked to see what has long reserve lists at the library. The Correspondant seems to be THE book right now so I got on the hold request now even though it's March's book.
September is Lulu Dean's Little Library of Banned Books and so I'll try and add to my summer read list. Buying books is a main pause as I'm trying to rein in miscellaneous spending.
I have some timing with some automatic scheduled payments and my car tabs all needing paid by or on July 1, but I left the checkbook tight. My retirement draw is supposed to happen by the 28th but I've found when it lands on a weekend like today, the dollars don't clear for several days later. It'll be fine, could even move funds around, though I prefer that it forces discipline to other spending. With June winding up, meteorological summer is nearly 1/3 over, though of course I know it technically just started and it ends September 20th. Retirement life is just sort of uneventful right now and that's ok.

We were unable to leave our cats for the last couple of years; no cattery would take them as they needed feeding small quantities 4-5 times a day. Luckily they were still managing to get in and out of the bathroom door, but we still had to do a 'poo patrol' round the garden every day. While your pet is happy enough, (and you can afford the meds), it seems right.
ReplyDeleteTravel came later.
I'm very happy so far the poo isn't a problem. This morning already he had a great wander outside and no accident in the diaper. Friend brought up Florida in October and the kids insist, with help from my sisters during the day, they can manage pup. Im not convinced though.
DeletePets can bring so much joy to our lives, even though the end of their lives can be as you’ve described. They are so much a part of the family though.

My son's description nailed it. He has bright moments like his outdoor wander this morning.
DeleteI appreciate the desire to get away for a while if only for a change of scenery. We have no plans to go anywhere overnight this summer so I am trying to think of it as a staycation and come up with enjoyable little things to do locally or with partial day trips. Having pets can limit travel but the rewards a good!
ReplyDeleteI have an overnight coming up in a few weeks with a concert. I am so looking forward to it!
DeleteWe don't currently have pets, and our desire to travel is what's holding us back from more seriously considering one. We've also been watching a lot of soccer, and the flopping is pure comedy. As someone who has watched a crazy amount of soccer, the flopping makes me laugh - high schoolers don't flop as much as these guys. It also makes it hard to assess when someone is legitimately injured, of course. - Hawaii Planner
ReplyDeleteWe got pup after a 5 year gap with just guinea pigs. My youngest wore us down. She was 10, so knew we'd have him many years after being empty nesters. Forctge players, they always grab the knee, no matter how they went down.
DeleteIt is amazing the things we do and sacrifice for fur babies! I love all mine and would do without to have them be comfortable. As they get older things get tougher - such as with us people! Thank you for taking such good care of them.
ReplyDeleteYes, it's not a sacrifice, just where my attention is needed right now. I hope I get the care I'm tryingvto give him when I need it some day.
DeleteSomeone in one of my book clubs said The Correspondent reminded her of what might be the outcome if ChatGPT was asked to write a book that senior women would enjoy. I haven't read it, but her comment made me laugh, and so I'm looking forward to your review once you finish it!
ReplyDeleteI so enjoy my younger daughter's fur babies when we visit, but like HP above, we travel too much at the current time to commit to a pet of our own. Thank you for sharing your reasons for why you now use a pet stroller. I confess to being confused on why pet owners use them vs letting their pets exercise, but you've given several reasons that make absolute sense.
It'll be a while before I get the book, but will jeep you updated. Ill keep that description in mind! I never understood the pets stroller either until this point. Our friends had two senior dogs. They were avid walkers and when dogs couldn't do the walks but woukd cry being left behind, they went the stroller route. Gave those two sweeties an extra summer and fall each of being out and about. Ill take pup out so he can snuff and explore.
DeleteSo sorry about your pup. I remember going through all of that with a cat a number of years ago. It's always heart breaking. Galena is a nice place to visit for a quick getaway. It has a cute walkable area with a lot of local shops to check out. I remember Galena Bake House had delicious breakfast empanadas, and The Canning Company was full of good stuff. Eatable souvenirs are my favorites.
ReplyDeleteI can't remember the name of other places that we ate but it was all good.
I remember your cat begire Binx. I'm not ready even knowing each day exceefs his breed life expectancy so us a gift. I think im on the fence about booking as there's a slight chance Florida with friends might happen and kids said they'd manage him.
DeleteI had a negative and heart breaking experience with my senior kitty and that makes me hold off on getting another. I love hearing about other people's pets, though.
ReplyDeleteHe will be my last pet. Ill gave an open door for pet sitting.
DeleteIt's hard when the pets get older. Sounds like you're currently the family pet-sitter. Sorry you can't travel as much as you wanted. I'd probably try to save a little extra so when the time is right you can travel then.
ReplyDeleteI try to remember about the Fetch points and I've been trying to remember to do Microsoft points. I can earn Amazon GC that way and it's fairly easy.
Hope you have a good week!
It's tough saving much right now as hus meds are so expensive plus the extra blood checks at $62 a pop. I put away a bit, just not what I'd like.
DeleteI'm the adoptive owner of Sr. dogs. Most of them eventually have had medical issues at some point. I have one with CVD and was on meds when I got him and another med has been added. Another one is 14 and can't always make it outside to go. And, I adopted a 9 year old who had never been house trained and I haven't been able to get him trained after having him 9 months. I keep pee pads down where they mostly go and otherwise just clean up. I love them and unless they are in pain I will continue to take care of them. I'm a pet owner who will take care for them even though it can be inconvenient. Diane
ReplyDeleteThat's a lot to take on...I will give 100% to pup, but I know emotionally I can't intentionally handle taking on more. I'm committed to him having good days no matter how many are left. We gad a great early sniffy walk.
DeleteI was seriously thinking about getting a dog when I retired but held off, and am now so glad I did. It's not that I don't want one but I don't want the responsibility and constraints anymore. That being said I was thinking about my old dog last night and wouldn't have switched him for the world. You're doing the right thing by pup - and that picture of him getting his head stuck is great!
ReplyDeleteMy MIL said she would have loved a dog after FIL passed away but knew she would feel too tied down and not be able to be as flexible as she felt she needed. She loves the family dogs. That's why pup will be my last pet too, I can be flexible but also do pet care for others.
DeleteTaking care of aging pets is not easy. My daughter and I said goodbye to our almost 18 year old cat last December when he went into kidney failure after a couple of years of slow decline. Vet care for him got to be very expensive, but, he was worth it.
ReplyDeleteIt's a small fortune and none is covered with pet insurance, though a slight discount on meds.
DeleteWell, this is a timely and relatable post as we just discovered our female dog has bladder leaking issues. We took her to the vet and they couldn't find any kind of infection, so they put her on a medication that should help. We've got blankets and towels covering everywhere she sleeps to capture the leaks when they happen and the meds are going to be costly as she needs to stay on them forever. Yes, being seniors ourselves and taking care of a senior pet is no fun. We just had to say goodbye to one of our cats that developed diabetes. We were not able to deal with that care or the expense of it, so we made that hard decision. It haunts us. I understand what you're dealing with and my heart goes out to you. Hang in there.
ReplyDeleteDon't feel guilty or haunted. He had a lovely life with you and your family. My vet was compassionate to me, understanding that at his age, the level of care might be too hard. Because he's a male, the bands have worked well-no tale to wrestle in the diaper. Why I waited two months to get them was dumb.
DeleteI understand completely what it’s like when loved pets are on the downward, so sad and feels impossible to leave them , even with trustworthy people, we don’t go on holidays anymore because one of our dogs has a chronic condition, so although he’s not old I would be so anxious to leave him . They give us so much unconditionally don’t they. I suspect my family and some friends think we need to toughen up 😉😀

They're your family. If pup didn't needcso much care, Id have lots of options. November went fine. By March, he had gone downhill. I just am changing my mindset for now to day trips and enjoy my home and outside.
DeleteI used to love pet sitting Bold. Sadly we couldn't have him once KL moved back as she is very allergic. He brought great joy though.
ReplyDeleteI hope you do get some time away. We are finally getting the car back on Friday so will head to the caravan. I have missed it greatly.
I'm permanently on antihistamines and sure feel the effect of the cats as it wanes. So happy for you getting the car back and tbus your flexibility back.
DeleteYou are putting your pup first and that is wonderful but also hard on you. You deserve a life, too. My cat developed kidney failure when she was 17 1/2. For the next 1 1/2 years I took her to twice a week vet visits for fluids. (Some people do this at home but I couldn’t.) After she passed at age 19 in 2021, I decided I wouldn’t get another cat until I got travel out of my system. I’m 71 so I’m traveling now while I can do so. I hope to get another cat at some point. Barbara M.
ReplyDeleteI don't forsee him being here for more than a year considering he's over 15 already. If he stops enjoying things, can't control his bowels and bladder ( the pee accidents now are more that he doesnt give enough notice sometimes but mostly makes it outside) and doesn't eat well, I'll ave to make the hard choice.
DeleteSorry to read about your pup. I have dealt with those issues, in the past. It is never easy!
ReplyDeleteLast night and this morning were a bit rough. He doesn’t hear well in addition to not seeing well but a thunderstorm with lightning disorientated him.
DeleteI have some friends who keep their pets alive way past a time when the dear sweet fur babies are comfortable or mobile.Confused furry friends walking about with diapers and looking generally miserable, it breaks my heart. Also, one friend in particular, has shrunk her life down so much, she rarely leaves the house now, has her schedule wrapped up around a very elderly pet. Absolutely no travel for the last 2 years. Sad and not health in any way. She is socially and mentally becoming blunted and I fear for her health. I think we need to be realistic about how long we keep our pets going .
ReplyDeleteIt's a tough line to figure out and I need a conversation with my vet. I use diaper overnight, but not during the day unless I know I'll be away for more than two hours. When hes alert, he enjoys his walks and sniffing a d exploring the back yard. He eats well. The bowel issue I think was food related, maybe he kicked some kitty food that got knocked to floor.
