Travel Research Update

I mentioned I'm starting to play around flight, accomodations, and other details associated with potential trips. Even if deferred until next spring, Scotland is top of my list, probably via London first. I easily could have spent another week ( months) there and not been bored. Going that far, I'd want to spend several weeks. It's just too hard to spend that kind of money in airfare for a one week trip. Pup is a big consideration though, so need to make sure he's cared for at a house.

My friend has thrown out the option of maybe even us camping when I get to Scotland to stretch the budget. I was pretty cold to the idea thinking if I'm going that far, I want comfort. But, I've thrown Googling a few campground type accomodations and my goodness would it be beautiful to wake up and have a good hike in the Scottish greens or down to the coast. I'm no longer ruling it out, though a few musts include easy access to a toilet and not sleeping on the ground.

She's looking at booking a trip to see me. Pet care needs to work for her too. Now, Minnesota isn't exactly a major tourist destination unless you love the great outdoors. We do though have shopping and theaters and sports, so could put a decent itinerary together. We've thrown out a road trip to Canada in the mix as well. Though, it's not just a hop away from me, so would want to make the road trip part of the itinerary building in stops. We could do the Waterfall Trail on route, maybe even hit a few casino "resorts" like Grand Portage and catch the day ferry to and from Royal Isle National Park which has a Michigan address technically in Lake Superior. Who knows though what a Minnesota experience might be by summer.

If I defer Scotland to Spring, I keep looking for either 7-10 day international bargains or 5-7 domestic. There's not any pop up deals like I found last July for my pending Greece trip, but I keep looking. I might roughly pick a couple different weeks and plan for pup, but take advantage of last minute deals, like all inclusive resorts in Mexico for under $1500 a person. I've never done an all inclusive resort,  just cruises.  Basically, I just want to have a few getaways and doing research to see options. It's become quite the hobby to be a desk chair travellor.

Last night with my mom friends, we raised the possibility of a repeat to Panama City Beach, hopefully all five of us, this fall again. If you recall, I spent only $700 all in, including sweatshirt and shoes I didn't need. We did a grocery and liquor shop, split the rental car cost, and limited eating out. It was such a wonderful time.

I'm getting gluttonous with wanting more travel aren't I. If only funds and life were without limitations.

  1. Have you thought about a static caravan on a site. 2/3 bedrooms and all mod cons. Plus there is normally a restaurant/entertainment, launderette and they are normally near a bus stop. What time of year were you thinking of going as there can be a midge problem in the summer. Xx

    2. I'll need to defer to my friend as she raised the camping as an option. I don't know much about holiday rental caravans. I used to be a big camper, just time and body changed.

  2. Hi Sam. I read your blog all the time but first time commenting. You can bring your friend to DC area and use my apartment. I am very close to a metro line to DC. I am a retired math professor and just lost my husband in September. Farah

    1. That's very kind. I'm so sorry for your loss. I love DC from years of working there multiple times a year. I'm in Minnesota so Canada is a lot closer than DC.

  3. You are lucky you have a friend to travel with. My closest friend loves to travel too, but we have wildly different ideas - she loves quiet relaxing and resorts, and I love cities.

    1. We seemed pretty matched travel wise, which was good. I'd be willing to alternate or combine both travel ideas for the right person.

  4. I am planning a 3-week trip to Scotland in June. In several places, I’m going to stay at Premiere Inns (UK budget hotels similar to Comfort Inn or Hampton Inn) and I’ve found a lower cost 2-star family-owned hotel with excellent reviews in one area. Also I’m pretty sure I’m going to skip Edinburgh because I’ve been there before and hotels there are SO expensive. I’ll be traveling by train and bus since I’m afraid to drive on the “wrong” side of the road. I’m going to get a senior rail card (£35) which gives about a 25% reduction on fares. It is for age 60+ Barbara M.

    1. Edinburgh is a must for part because I've never been, but also love the idea of the Scottish islands. We've looked at ( high level) Harris Islands and I've watched Skye videos. I hit that age demographic now so great tip on trains.

  5. I love all kinds of trips. The one after NZ is a very budget trip (my budget is basically the same as your Panama City Beach) & I love the idea of maximizing value for minimal prices. It helps that my friend has an awesome condo in St. George, close to some amazing Utah state parks, and about an hour from Zion. And that we have Las Vegas as the airport destination, and you can almost always find a cheap/free hotel options in Las Vegas. That just leaves the rental car & food, plus the shuttle. My flights were free using a Chase Southwest credit.

I have a few friends turning 50, and we all have fun things planned, some of which I'm invited to join. The Las Vegas concert trip was for a few of my friends, and then Greece with my sister/BFF. Another friend turns 50 in 2027 & wants to do the Catalina Thru Hike, which we will probably train for & do together. It also involves backpacking/camping, which is ... a lot! If you can find a stationery camper van or yurt option for your trip, that would be a nice option. We've done glamping before (yurt with outlets & a heated bed & a very close & clean bathroom) that is awesome in Big Sur. I would totally do it again.

My head is also filled with all kinds of travel destinations & plans. We're planning into 2027 at this point. No pups, but I did leave emergency contact info with my sister & BFF, given we are out of contact for 5 days. They've each taken a kid to be in charge of. BFF has Nick, since she's in CO as well, and reports that she has the "riskier" child, because he is a rock climber, wild skier, and is currently rushing. My sister has the much quieter Sam, who will be studying, seeing his girlfriend & working. ;)

    1. Y friend's of the same age all have busy family lives so not likely to be able/ willing to travel the way I want to but that's so wonderful for you. I am very grateful for G's kindness hosting us in her condo.

  7. If travel is what you want I say go for it. I feel very strongly that for most of us we have x number of years in retirement where we still have the strength/health to enjoy travel. (That being said on my trip to Thailand the oldest in our group was 80 and he'd just come back from Uganda!) After that I reckon most of us slow down unless we are very diligent about keeping up with our health/strength (and illness doesn't intervene), and even then maybe we just don't feel like it anymore. I keep saying no more long haul and yet every time I travel I get bitten by the bug again!

    1. You're far from 80 so I see more travel in your future. Yes, now is my time to travel. I likely won't have grandkids so won't need to build in traveling to them.

  8. Once you can afford it, and keep your main bills paid - do it. I agree with Treaders! I already regret not traveling more in my 20s and 30s before real financial obligations showed up!

    1. My real expenses started at 23 with becoming a parent, but we got a bit of family travel in. I agree with you and encourage my kids to spread their wings and travel far and wide.

  9. Iceland Air has stop over options of 1-7 days and then it is an easy flight to Scotland from there. https://www.icelandair.com/en-ca/flights/stopover/
How about doing the Maritimes in Canada? Gorgeous and your dollar goes far.

    1. I'll add these to ideas to research. For Scotland, I'd probably connect with my friend so go by way of London.
