Sunday Night Thoughts

Valentine's Day is come and gone, and I I had not a hint of the day beyond stupid adverts popping up during the Olympics. My sister got home late Saturday night so I didn't have cat feeding duty today. We got along just fine and even the black and white one seemed to like me coming by weeks end. Of course, he knew I was good lady and he likes his food. I tried getting pup outside a lot with the warm temps, but as you can see from this little video, the melt freeze, melt, freeze makes for challenging walks with an old dog.

This week should be quiet and slow. My daughter has tomorrow off for Presidents Day so no big dog tomorrow. Friday is same sisters surgery. I asked for a few favorites from her for recuperation and lasagna and sloppy joes were instant requests so I'll make two separate pans of lasagna and a batch of sloppy joes. She likes goulash how my mom made it with leftover sloppy Joe meat. I'll make that too over the weekend but unlike my moms, I won't use tomato juice and overcook the macaroni as it simmers forever. I'll make my nice thick tomato, garlic, well seasoned meat sauce then add the pasta. A great cook my mom was not, bless her. But, some of my sister's still make their hot dishes her way. Sister's also a fan of waffle fries with seasoned sour cream for dipping so I'll splurge on those to go with the Joe's.

I'll shop for the week Thursday and I think do the lasagna for Friday. I don't know how long her surgery will take, but if all is well, she'll go home the same day. We were very low on fruit and coffee so stopped after the airport run Friday for those along with a few things to round out some meal plans. I think I'm doing well and should make my goal of lopping 20% off my average spend this month. I'm still making up for December and January free for all's though, so low spends might keep on through April.

I've got my annual eye exam Tuesday. I've been taking my blood pressure regularly and it's just a smidge out of the high normal, so a vast improvement from February 2 when I started the HBP meds. The non productive cough side effect is a thing though so I'll mention that when I go back for a recheck on my bloods and an official BP measure. At times it's a lot of scratchiness. I'm trying hard to stay on top of the health maintenance items. Part of my daughter's anxiety stems from, perhaps irrational, thoughts that she knows she's going to lose more people in her life. She's envious that her friends not just have their parents, but haven't lost aunts and uncles and most have at least two if not all their grandparents. For being so young, she's lost a lot of classmates from highschool too. I'm hoping a little assurance that for me, that's a long ways away.

My Sunday night thoughts aren't very stimulating but doing math on budgets, meal planning, and organizing my week feels like it gives me a tiny sense of control. My brain is occupied to what's in my sphere of oversight while the rest swirls in disarray. Here's a few other pics from my outside time this weekend. It's no wonder with this dirty pile of snow as my  front window view that February brings gray moods. New week ahead and more thawing, but snow ( which should melt fast) expected later and will cover the gross dirty snow.

View from the road.

View from my porch of the snow pile- yuck.

Photo of the icy pond path-at least it's
not the ugly dirty snow.

The pond looks serene and there's
thawed patches throughout.

  1. I hadn't really thought about the effect of snow piles in everyone's front gardens... our houses round here are set pretty close to the road, so the heaps would be right close to the window... ugh.

    1. I hate that we are the dumping ground. If any neighbor ever complains about my weedy front yard, I'll tell them to call the city and request their yard be the dumping ground and they can have the mud, ice, salt, and other crap that comes along with it.

  2. Fresh pristine snow is beautiful but dirty piles of snow, not so much right! And it does a number on your mood too! Do you wear yack trax when you walk on that ice? I'm just curious. I carry them with me when I'm out but don't often wear them.

    1. I do have a spiky sole gripper for one pair of shoes, but that doesn't help the dogs, so best to just avoid the paths that aren't very walkable. That pile is so ugly.

  3. Our piles have finally just about melted - and to be honest the brown and dead looking grass looks good to me. It just looks neat. I am tired of snow.

    1. i have neighbors who have virtually no snow-they do not get the piles from the plow and face slightly different. It's quite a difference two houses away.

  4. All that snow! I loved the video, what a challenge for your little old boy. I don't like snow when it goes all dirty like that, it seems to hang around for ever.
Its understandable your daughter having anxieties. I think Jon went through something similaras he lost his Dad when he was young. I'm sure her knowing that you're taking care of yourself will give her a little reassurance. xxx

    1. In forty minutes at most we walked was 1/8th of a mile. But, he has his good smelling time and loves that. I just take him at his pace. I hope my daughter keeps with therapy and actually takes some to heart. I know other young people have faced so much, but that doesn't quell her fears-probably adds to them.

  5. Oh how well I remember the snow piles. Honestly, as built up as my once pristine area is getting, I dream of returning east to Maine or trying Minnesota. Then I see something like your video to remind me how difficult winters were. I used the same word you did, “treacherous.” (And your voice is lovely!)
Two of my kids are on BP medication. (Genetics) I predict I too will finally be on it come my appointment, but that’s not until late May. Okay, call me a broken record, but even though I have to wait close six months to see a doctor THANK GOD I can pay monthly premiums, a deductible and co payment with our privatized system.
Your foods sound comforting and warming, by the way. Your family is fortunate to have you.
No plans for the week. We are all fighting a cold. Daughter comes home for spring break on the 27th. I tried to convince her to do something else..a school trip perhaps, but she balked at the idea. I get the sense, however, she will be in better spirits than she was over Christmas break. It seems the mood has shifted somewhat.
Have a great week. One can only hope!

    1. Oh I hope for you that she is in better spirits. It's so hard and for your daughter still so fresh. Mine has the day off and a dentist appt in town so she's coming with her sociable cat before then will stay after for some dinner. I am not a fan of hearing my voice-I think I sound rough and not articulate, but thank you for the nice comment.

  6. Waffle fries with seasoned sour cream sounds like a comfort snack, so yes, she needs that, who wouldn't!

    1. It's a simple little bit of comfort. I just might have one or two with her.

  7. My husband has to take two different blood pressure pills in order to get his under control. No cough though so that is a good thing. Our snow and ice are almost gone, but starting tomorrow, freezing rain, wind, and lots of snow. Almost blizzard conditions I believe.

    God bless.

    1. If it gets too bothersome they said they could try another. If it works though for helping my heart, I guess it's a small worry. Stay safe. I'm not looking forward to a big almost spring storm.

  8. It's been quite mild here, but it's taking an age for the snow and ice to melt and then, as you say, it refreezes again. My Yaktrax are getting a workout this year!

  9. Your sister is lucky to have you.
Snow never stays here long enough to get dirty much less in piles. No snow removal equipment here anyway

    1. I'm sure snow would shut down your cities. I remember traveling to DC on e right after a bout if more snow than they see and schools had been closed for a week.

  11. I am so sick of snow, and we get rain today which will probably be freezing rain, ugh! Your sister's comfort food sounds lovely, it tastes 100x lovelier when made with love. Those waffle fries sound like heaven!

  12. I'm reading this in early March: our snow went away mid-February and, compared to you up in Minnesota, we got nothing (13-14 inches). I love winter and I love snow, but this year I had too much going on to even enjoy it.
