A Day in the Life
I'm trying to use this gift of early retirement better than I feel I have been since my days became my own last April. Now granted, I have substitute taught a few days, took a 12 week part time contract, travelled a total of 6 weeks (two short and a long) and then got into the holiday season which seems to have calendar of its own. My days vary depending on it the big dog is here and if he's being particularly clingy, antsy and we need to get outside more. But typically, while my days vary, typically each day is a mix of life admin, housework, errands, meal preparation, personal care/exercise, and free time. Here was a glimpse from yesterday.
My daughter had stayed over the night before, so I didn't even get up with the big dog, but lazed in bed until after 7:00 when I then started coffee. I got showered and dressed and by then, could guzzle down cup number one before brushing my teeth and taking him to doggie daycare, his typical Tuesday scheduled day.
I needed a few grocery items, but I didn't want to go home and then back out for an eye appointment later in the morning. (I have to go back in 4 weeks as there was some early signs of developing glaucoma in my right eye he'd like to do further tests about. My prescription remained the same.) I had the forethought to bring a cooler bag with a large ice pack for milk, frozen vegetables and the what has become a regular buy, a $2.00 precooked rotisserie chicken. I stopped by the Vet for pups prescription and filled up the gas tank as gas had dropped to $2.53 and I had a few more cents off in rewards.
Once home I put groceries away and had another cup of coffee with the last two slices of an Italian loaf. That fueled me to get the chicken deboned, get stock made and then cooled to make supper later. I froze most of the stock for tortellini soup later in the week. The kitchen was really a sight as with the girls here Monday and an extra cat, there were more dishes than fit in the dishwasher the night before and we left them. Plus my son had made himself breakfast after I left and before his day started, though he worked from home.
I spent several hours cleaning the kitchen getting rugs shook then washed, swept, mopped, dusted and vacuumed. Because I had toast almost at 12:00, I didn't need lunch but was a bit hungry so ate two clementines and a string cheese stick for fuel. I had the Olympics on while snacking, television watching in the day not being typical. I also had a chat conversation with a couple sisters, both getting updated on her surgery time on Friday and other tidbits. Both pup and the kitty were looking for a little attention, and who was I to deny them? Satisfied, they both took naps and I got caught up on blog reading, a bit of travel research, quick look to see if any houses were added for my son's spring search, and the friends tab on Facebook. I try not to look at the regular part and only get friend highlights and limit to a 10-minute check not more than 2X a day (but I slip.) I got a start on this post and will finish in the morning before publishing.
The warm, though cloudy, weather is continuing at least for today, so I got a walk in and then read for an hour. I took my phone and grabbed a bit of the gray if quite warm day for February 17th. Rain and snow and cold starts again tonight.
By then, it was getting closer to when I'd pick the dog up. However, I stopped at the Dollar Tree to get scrubby sponges, disinfectant wipes, and cleanser as after cleaning, I saw we were low on all. I popped a block over and took a look at the Salvation Army store too, just in case there were any basic T's for Greece ( none worth buying). Mine are quite stretched and though I said no more clothes, Anne convinced me a good buy could be part of my travel budget like the skirt I found a couple weeks back. Once home with him, both dogs ran around outside, and I threw the ball a bit until their supper time. I fed them, then put together a chicken and pasta hotdish for our supper. My son was home, so we ate together while more Olympics were on. I saved the women's figure skating to watch in the evening instead of live.
He cleaned up from dinner, and I just watched sports until getting the boys out again. As it's garbage day on Wednesday, I did a quick pass of all the cans in the house and took out anything lingering and my son pulled the cans down to the end of the driveway. That pretty much signals to the dogs that the day is over. I did my evening routine and read a bit in bed before my eyes were too heavy. I wanted to be up early and get my Wednesday started.
That's about it. When it gets to real spring, I'd like to get more social time but this week, so many family and friends are on vacation, getting ready for vacation, or getting caught up from vacation. When the Olympics are done, I'll have the TV off during the day (though admittedly, a YouTube binge or two might happen) and eventually I'll add outside jobs.

| The dead and hibernating raspberry bushes. I'll clean this out and try and put a bit of order but not sure of the method. |
I already had a thought to start cutting back the raspberry bushes but will wait until I can see better what died on their own and what can be trimmed for nicer growth and fruit development. My life is small and ordinary, but I'll take that to drama. I'm trying folks to live a good life even if it's mostly alone.

I agree with you on preferring a small and ordinary life to drama. That being said I find the fact that my primary tasks in retirement are being a homemaker not what I have ever sought in my life.
ReplyDeleteNine of this is what I thought I'd be living at 60, but here it is.
Deleteyou are doing good.
ReplyDeleteNot so much this morning, but thank you.
DeleteYour days sound quite full.
ReplyDeleteFor what it’s worth, I like the St.John’s Bay t-shirts from JC Penney. They often have sales where they are under $10 each, less for certain color choices. They have vee and crew neck, (I prefer vee) and long sleeves, 3/4 and short sleeves. I have quite a collection. (My winter uniform is leggings, a knee length denim skirt and 3/4 sleeve vee neck tee, boots. Summer it’s a long skirt, short sleeve vee neck, sandals or espadrilles. ) The only issue for me is the color choices the past few seasons hasn’t pleased me, so I have a lot of white and black tees!

I'll take a look though the next week will be full with my sister. Not having great start and feel ashamed. Just got very happy news for someone and it just brought a wave of jealousy and sadness that is eating me up. Today, I hate this small life.
DeleteThat sounds like a busy and productive day!
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't know where to look for a teeshirt but i reckon its something worth splurging on, not only will you feel good wearing them but they should stand up to lots of advantures unlike cheap ones where the seams twist and go out of shape after one wash! xxx
Yes, probably should make sure they're good quality. Was hoping I'd find something in the charity shop. Just nothing good.
DeleteI don't know about your life being small...and ordinary is so beautiful. I have started cleaning out my fridge every Friday, wiping down the shelves and pulling dibs and dabs out to consume over the weekend. By Tuesday morning it is empty and still mostly clean, ready for a trip to the store.
ReplyDeleteThat's a good order to your fridge. Sorry, I just got happy news for someone and it's made me feel even louder about my life circumstances. Stupid jealousy mixed with sadness for loss and never will have.
DeleteI love that you are able to help your kids out at various intersection points in their lives, from opening up your house, to helping with pets & providing meals & logistics - I think it's awesome. I go back & forth with how much "excitement" I want/need in my life. Your days sound lovely. - Hawaii Planner
ReplyDeleteIt's become apparent it's just going to be the four of us, so no need planning for a life of an extended family so will help them now.
DeleteOrdinary is wonderful. I can't be bothered with drama. Planning holidays sounds lovely.
ReplyDeleteSmall is not and I'm not feeling great about life today. Thank you though for the uplifting words.
DeleteYou are more active than me - I am fast becoming a Winter Olympics ( armchair) expert . As is Milo - who sits on my lap as I watch

We can talk later. More happy news that's not in my family and I'm ashamed how jealous I am.
DeleteYou're day is full. Like Meg, I also wear the JCP tshirts. Good value for acceptable quality. I'll do some shrub pruning tomorrow morning, prep for spring.
ReplyDeleteI hope to get to a JCPenney then before packing.
DeleteYour day sounds nicely full, and I continue to envy the frequent references you make to your children, since my two are currently several thousands of miles away. And I will forever smile that your area refers to 'hot dishes' while mine refers to them as casseroles. Your's is much more charming!
ReplyDeleteThere's nothing about my life to envy right now. My kids are close but that just means I'm here with their problems too.
DeleteBut, my dreariness aside, I love my kids being close and would be hard to have a lot of distance. We did for 10 years with my son in California.
DeleteThough I have no JCP tees, it sounds like a good option to check out. I would set a T and E budget for travel clothes and not feel bad at all about purchasing them because it is buying with purpose
ReplyDeleteI've resigned to the fact that while I have a lot of clothes, perhaps not the right clothes or quality.
DeleteI was just thinking last night about going ahead and getting a Go-Pro camera as I'm still toying with setting up my own, mostly private family Youtube channel. Seeing you filming your walks is definitely egging me on!!! I hope you do lots of filming in Greece and post loads of photos too! And heck $2 for a rotisserie chicken???? At my local store they're selling them for €13!!! Needless to say I don't buy them!
ReplyDeleteThe chickens are the ones they freeze at end of day, then resell. I just use for soup and part of meals. Fresh they are in the $7-$10 depending on store by me. I'm just trying to grab some snippets here and there.
DeleteMy mom loves a rotisserie chicken. She makes soup year round (Caribbean moms, lol!) they come in so handy overall. I like the idea of you adding new clothes for the trip if yours look a little worn out, hopefully a sale comes up soon. Thanks for sharing your day with us.
ReplyDeleteIt'll be tight since trip is less than 2 weeks away. It's just ts that would be nice to update.
DeleteIt's surprising how the days go by so quickly. When I first stopped working I wondered what I would do with myself all day, now I can't imagine how I fit work in!
ReplyDeleteManaging medically related stuff seems more time consuming than I'd have thought.
DeleteSix weeks of travel is awesome! Finding a deal on rotisserie chicken is also awesome. I get a lot of joy from my travels, but finding bargains while at home also brings me joy! We are traveling right now, but I am recording my steps on a few “step apps” that I use. It takes a while to earn anything, but I just claimed a $10 Target gift card from one of the apps, and will claim a couple of $5 rewards from a walking app and a survey app when we get home. Money saving apps might be food for a future blog post! I admire your batching of errands and use of bits of time-something that I am trying to improve in retirement.
ReplyDeleteI currently have a gift card for a couple movie tickets and some Amazon perks from surveys ( though mini boycotting Amazon for the time being). I figure these earnings defray an expense category a bit and that can go towards travel. After Greece though, I'll need to be less global for a while but plenty of places to go to in the US and many driving there and make that part of the trip.
DeleteWhat Cherie above said: ordinary is wonderful.
