"Little More Conversation" about Memphis
There's a bit more I could write about on the trip, but trying not to put you to sleep. Also, my android is getting outdated and pictures not the best so many are on my sister's phone and she'll share with me, but here's a few I had. My older sister and I had to keep reminding ourselves that while we were vacationing, little sister was working. We had to make sure not to be bad influences and keep her up all hours. No problem there as I turn into a pumpkin by 10:00. As you read Friday, we ate well; we drank well too.
Sunday, arriving about noon and given an early check-in, was a day to check out the scene of downtown Memphis, Beale Street, live music, and many beverages. As the weather wasn't much different than home, we were quite comfortable. Dinner was at Hueys, a Memphis staple with many locations. We had beverages and conversation poolside back at the hotel before calling it a day.
Monday got off to a start with my sister going to work then we tourists started our day with a nice breakfast in the hotel before heading off. I'd highly recommend, actually do not miss going to the Civil Rights Museum. In fact, I think every member of Congress, the president and his cabinet, and all Supreme Court Judges must be required to go and view every exhibit before being sworn into office. I didn't take many pictures as I just wanted to read and think. This caught eye.
We took our time after the museum, loving the street art. The cable car wasn't running but I saw this station was named for Dr. King. We had a late lunch on Beale Street of gumbo ( yes! No shellfish in it) and shared order of fried green tomatoes, before finding an outdoor patio bar with really good live music. Fellow travellers were three tables from UK and another from Germany.

My sister caught me totally enjoying my lunch. |
We met a group of my sister's coworkers who live in the area for Monday dinner at the Blues City Cafe. I was thinking there was going to be live music but it was more a diner than a club. We walked to a park to see the bridge lights, but there were just colored lights, no light show as my sister said normally occurs. We didn't linger long as the downtown and river area is a bit iffy after dark.
Tuesday we walked a lot to see various features near the river. There was an installment of suffrage rights advocates that we made sure to see. After a cool down and water fill up at the visitor center, we walked to Mud Island over the bridge and did the river walk. Lunch was a spinach, feta, and strawberry salad wrap before heading back for a few hours in the pool. We cleaned up before seeing the ducks in the Peabody Hotel, who ride the elevator down in the morning and up in the afternoon. Just silly. We bought a bottle of wine to have a pre-dinner drink on the balcony, that had nice people watching in the shade.
Tuesday was also the bougie dinner at Flights for my younger sisters birthday. My favorite funny enough was the chicken and waffles (served fancy) but the stuffing for the quail was phenomenal, and the potato croquette with the lamb was melt in your mouth delicious. Wines were good, desserts great. We rolled home.

That's my sister in the foreground. |
The memorabilia and cars were interesting and more focused on his life overall, so slightly different perspective from the various movies. We had fun with the interactive cameras putting you in Elvis ensembles or movie posters.

Elvis wore this much better. |

Do you like my "hang 10"? |
What yummy foods, and I do love a peanut butter banana sandwich. I've never been to Memphis, but Graceland sounds fun, and I love the pictures. You rock that jumpsuit. I'm sure the museum was thought provoking, and I hope we don't forget. Thank you for taking us along on your trip, and I'm so glad you had a good time.
ReplyDeleteI can say I've been to Memphis now. It was fun but the highlights were with my sisters.
DeleteHow lovely to get to spend time with your sisters and vacation at the same time.
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing. Memphis was never on my "must go" list. Now, I will make the effort ( I will be in Nashville for an event in 2027). As an immigrant whose parents were young adults in WW2 and near Rotterdam, history is #1 on my list for education.
ReplyDeleteI am with you, all of DC should go and also spend 2 full days in the DC Holocaust museum to read every board and watch and really listen to every video there.
Happy Weekend (and recovery?) to you Sam.
It was an opportunity trip for me as well, not a must see. But I grew up with older sisters that were Elvis fans and ascI said, the civil rights museum was worth the visit.
DeleteYears ago on a road trip, we stopped in Memphis to have an early lunch, not intending to spend any time. We happened to drive past the Civil Rights Museum and went in simply to honor MLK. We were astonished at how great this museum was and spent 7 hours there (not having had lunch first). When we came out we grabbed a bite on Beale Street and then got back on the road. I intend to go back but don't spend much time in the South so it's hard to fit it in on my road trips.
ReplyDeleteI can't see unless it's another sister trip in the future going again, but it's a good one trip place. We had more than enough time.
DeleteThat looks fantastic, and I really would like to see the Civil Rights Museum one day. So glad you had fun! - Hawaii Planner
ReplyDeleteIt was worth the trip alone. I'm sure there's a documentary on it somewhere available though seeing and hearing voices were powerful.
DeleteYou are a great trip report writer! I’m
ReplyDeletesaving your post in Pinterest for future Memphis trip planning ideas..We’re trying to visit all 50 states, and I realized that we could start in Memphis and visit Arkansas, Mississippi and Alabama during one road trip.,I’ve heard the Civil Rights Museum is not to be missed.. Looking forward to reading future trip reports.
Funny you should say that as her coworkers resided in Arkansas, Mississippi, and Tennessee, all going home after the Monday night dinner then back the next morning for work.
DeleteMy momma loved Elvis ( we saw him live in concert in about 1975) and my aunt lived in Memphis during the 70’s so we drove by Graceland numerous times. He lived there then so no tours. I adored Memphis in the 70’s, we went about every other month, but have not been back since my aunt moved away. I first ate at a Red Lobster in Memphis. It was considered fancy by us country folks…. lol. Cindy in the South
ReplyDeleteRed lobster was fancy for me too...and Olive Garden Italian, lol. His home really was just part of a neighborhood, though he had property that extended.
DeleteGlad you enjoyed your trip south. Memphis is a fun city to visit but I have to admit I do not like Beale Street.
ReplyDeleteIt was ok with a lot of food options. I thought there'd be more music, was thinking more like Nashville and Broadway I believe. Our Hotel was on Main St that intersected Beale, but several blocks closer to the river.
DeleteGlad you had fun! My sister bought me a Snow Village church over 30 years ago, and the rest of my family has added to it over the years. I think I have 30 houses/stores/etc. that I now dread getting out every year...
ReplyDeleteMine are Kohls dupes of Dept 56 but good enough for the four weeks a year.
DeleteThe food sounds fabulous! It sounds like you had a really good time too. I would have liked seeing the ducks at the Peabody. You look good in your Elvis costume. 😂 Fried Green Tomatoes? Oh yes! Yum!
ReplyDeleteI had never had fried green tomatoes or cat fish, so two new to me foods. The ducks are just a bit silly and the crowds insane to see them walk by.
DeleteSo glad you had a great time!
ReplyDeleteI knew with my companion's it would be a good time.
DeleteSeems like a good time was had by all - yay! :)
ReplyDeleteWell, P had to work but hopefully we made her nights more fun. I'm glad she still got to go out with her friend coworkers too.
DeleteI am glad you had a good time, but have never heard anyone call the Peabody ducks silly. I lived only a few blocks from Graceland, so went by it all the time. BIL from NY wanted to go by every day he visited us and stop at the gate. Did you notice how there were bluffs on the TN side of the river while the bridge extended for miles on the Ark side because of flooded lowland that had no bluff to contain the river? I love the bridge. Where are you going on your next trip?
ReplyDeleteI meant silly fun...as in not to take too serious. I didn't really notice but now that you say, I did see more of a levy on Tennessee. I live a stones throw from the Mississippi in Minnesota so crossing bridges is a regular thing for me. Not sure where next trip will be, but for sure in November will be going to the UK. I may have a fall trip to Florida with friends and camping with my sister.
DeleteThe Civil Rights Museum SHOULD be a required trip for all federal public servants! ‘Nuff said.
ReplyDeleteYou look great, Sam! Thanks for the update .
-Meg B.
Not the most flattering if pictures, no Instagram poses for sure, but me in my natural state of being. Yes, a must that I'd love to petition as a ballot measure because Lord knows no one in Congress would add a requirement that they have to actually learn history. I can just see the embarrassment certain members of Congress from CO and GA would cause.
DeleteWhat a lovely way to spend time with your sisters ( and Elvis )
ReplyDeleteSiobhan x
I'm hopeful there's more adventures with them. My sister that's no longer with us would have had a ball.
DeleteHa! They are more likely to have it shut down, alas.
ReplyDeleteSadly, you're probably right. It was an excellently currated museum in a sad place.
DeleteSam, you're a fantastic travel writer and your photos are wonderful! I love the graffiti (more like street art)and the view from your balcony at the Peabody Hotel, that tower looks almost Italianate! You definitely rock a jumpsuit and a pink Cadillac!
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad you had fun with your sisters. xxx
By November I hope to have replaced my phone and figure out my camera. I didn't stay at the Peabody, that's just where the ducks stay and ride the elevator. The view was from our balcony of the adjoining older part of the hotel we stayed at ( very standard but nice). Elvis had a certain style, didn't he?
DeleteGlad you enjoyed your trip to Memphis and got to spend time with your sisters. Visiting Graceland looks like a fun day. Thank you for sharing all your wonderful photos.
ReplyDeleteIt was interesting, fun, but sad as well. People really exploited him and it went down generations. That's not really part of the tour though the meditation garden and graves are there, still with visitors bringing flowers for him and Lisa Marie.
