Friday Fiscal Wellness Check June 20, 3025

I copy the previous week, delete the old and updated as I go along the week as a way even when busy and not in a blogging mindset I'm accountable to myself. Here's my recap of Friday, June 13 to Thursday, June 19.

Avoiding Spending/ Saving on Needs

  • Made a copy cat Nothing Bundt lemon cake. Total cost including eggs, $7.20. The same size at the bakery is up to $40. Now not sure mine would quite feed 18, but 13 of us had decent slices and there was leftovers.
  • For my one Tuesday family lunch for June, I joined for the Tuesday burger, fries, shake $10 special at a newish restaurant I wanted to try. It was ok and fortunately I had mowed earlier to burn extra calories.
  • Bought just the minimal groceries ( after the weekend food shop for hosting), by making sure to use every fresh ingredient in the house, no waste.
  • Used my daughter's app at her local grocery store for four extreme loss leaders. I signed up too so I could buy when I'm her town.
  • Saved money on a cat bed...my legs work perfect for Little Miss
She likes to sleep right in the groove my legs make when I lie on my back in the morning. Cat paralysis is real.

Spent Intentionally

  • This goes under entertainment but I did a mini stock up of wines at Trader Joes. These are not fine wine but acceptable flavors for my palate. I got two Pinot Noir and Two Pinot grigio. I already had a couple bottles of Ro`se. When one bottle is less than a glass of house wine even in a basic restaurant or bar, I consider this thrifty.
  • When humidity and temp got high, I chose to use the AC, but limited to keeping it at 75, enough to keep inside comfortable. I turned off when not needed. I refuse to be miserable, but don't want to be wasteful.
  • There's a few odds and ends I've been hoping to find. My daughter and I hit a Thursday school/ church sale and I came up a winner. The only want I didn't find was a small table to repaint for the porch to go between chairs. Here's a few finds that were actually on my list.
    I've needed a bedside
    reading lamp for ages
     This was perfectly sized
    and basic for $1.

The jackpot, a $2 wood tiny
Chest of drawers to paint black
for a second night stand. Bonus
Storage. I'll wait for the humidity to
    leave before painting.

For 25¢, this holds soap quite well.

  • ...and a couple miscellaneous finds that were such good finds I couldn't resist. Not pictured, a kink free hose for $1, and a Rubbermaid divided salad lunch container with ice pack for 50¢. The above jack-o'-lantern ceramic was just 25¢ and totally not a need but we love Halloween.
A like new hand towel for 25¢.

Not sure yet what to do with this but
minimally I thought it would make an
adorable plant holder on the porch. It could also serve as a makeshift table
between the chairs so I can throw the gross and broken yellow plastic. This all childrens wood chair was $1.

Opportunities to add Funds/Windfalls

  • Entered Fetch receipts and played MS Rewards. Referral points came through from my sisters.

Then, there are often other things that impacted my check book that came up without much planning or notice, or an all-out splurge.

  • Meeting up with my daughter, she needed a few items and was also going to grab sushi from the deli area. ( I brought her leftovers but she saved for Monday.) Being mom, I treated her, and as she was really hungry, she grabbed two rolls. I am ignorant about Sushi prices not realizing each was $10.99- she didn't either. At least it was delicious she said. It made me appreciate my thrifty grocery shop even more.
Daily Dinner Diary (Friday 6/13 to Thursday, 6/19).
  • Fri - Black beans and rice with sweet potatoes bowls or burritos ( older daughter here)
  • Sat-. Sloppy Joe's and lots of sides ( family park clean up, book club, and cards)
  • Sun- leftovers ( daughter had above sushi)
  • Mon-  Vegetarian lasagna with spinach salad, garlic toast
  • Tues-  Goulash made with leftover sloppy joes, steamed asparagus from Farmers market
  • Weds- Dal with rice, naan, palak paneer
  • Thurs-Juicy Lucy ( cheddar) or Grandma's Favorite ( cream cheese and olives) stuffed burgers with watermelon
It was a rainy, hot, humid week. I imagine more of those will be the norm. I'm not yet acclimated to summer heat. How was your week?

  1. We had a fairly cool, drizzly week but they are predicting heat dome effects this weekend into the week. Uggh. Summer is my least favorite season and that weather prediction is proof why!

    1. I'm probably mistaken, but I feel my anglophile leanings are that the UK seems like short summer, short winter, and long springs and fall. I dislike air conditioning but when it's day after day after day and sleep is impossible, I cave a bit.

  3. You found some great deals! That little chest of drawers looks like it's really nice quality as well. Well done. It was very much a splurge week for us, but with the job news & an accelerated start (plus, DH receiving his severance), it was all good. - Hawaii Planner

    1. It's pretty solid. My daughter carried it out; she's strong and said it was dense. I'm so happy you're moving into a good role. I hope M has takes the time to as you took to find the best next situation.

    1. They are so moist and a real treat. Basically the copycats have more eggs, sour cream and pudding. But my Bundt cake pan works so well and the cakes have been a bit.

  5. You got some great deals! We’re back from vacation which had glimmers of frugality but was for the most part not. I’m still off until Monday so I’m taking advantage of that and getting laundry done, scanning receipts and just catching up on things. I went grocery shopping this morning and spent a small fortune but we’re set. It’s going to be a scorcher here so trying to minimize the errands next week. Made a return, got gas, went to the post office. Booked the hotel for our girls trip and we are in the planning stages of a long weekend in September with both kids and their partners-our first trip all together! Now to tackle some cleaning and organizing, spread out over today and tomorrow. Going to a swim birthday party on Sunday, I’ll pick up some flowers for the birthday girl and bring a little snack of some sort. JoAnn

    1. Vacation planning is so fun. We've got our London accomodations secured and a couple ideas for booking the road trip stays. Flowers are a lovely birthday gift.

  6. I just made a cake from a box. I had most of the ingredients already. Unfortunately I used a cake pan that leaked. Just a mess. I salvaged some. Yes, it's getting hot and I don't have A/C. Happy weekend.

    1. That's got to be disappointing. I use it sparingly but the AC is a gift this weekend.

  7. Oh you! A lemon Bundt cake sounds wonderful! And yes, those bakery cakes have gotten expensive. Terrific yard sale finds, I like the idea of a plant on the child sized chair. I had a good week here. It’s not raining as much as it has been, so I’m grateful for that.

    1. I'm not a huge garage saler but those school and church ones seem to be good ones without driving all over. I'd like some rain again. Maybe that would break the humidity.

  8. What fabulous finds, that chest of drawers is particularly gorgeous! I know all about cat paralysis! xxx

    1. We get a break from humidity next week so I'll tackle painting the chest. I'm using the lamp straight away. I love this little girls so much, but for 8 pounds, she sure feels heavy on the legs.

  9. Your week sounds like it was great and those were good finds. Sushi seems stupid expensive - why is that? I usually grab it when HEB has a store coupon, but even then its rarely under $10. I could go for a piece of that leftover lemon cake right now.

    1. I don't eat sushi so never pay attention, but this was a Target Deli so never thought each small roll would be that much! I caved and at the last piece. No more cake for me this summer.

  10. Making that cake sounds like a bargain instead of the $40! I love cake, but couldn't bring myself to spend that much on one lol.
Sounds like a pretty good week. I love the things you found at the sale. Wow, what bargains!

    1. I'd like to make one totally from scratch, but cheated and used the cake mix. I was happy with my finds.

  11. I love all your pictured finds. I bought Tommy a small white lamp at a yard sale. He loved it. Maybe you could use the cute child's chair between chairs on the porch until you find a table, then use it for a plant. You could throw away ugly yellow plastic table. Glad you found a good source.

    1. Yes, that would be a good short term use for the chair. The yellow table is very ugly.
