Back on Land

Thanks for all the kind and fun comments on my getting ready to travel post. I'm sorry I didn't respond to individual ones, just hard getting caught up once home. I'm back after a pretty lazy and relaxing week of vacation. To be honest, nothing was exciting, but I wasn't going for that. My sisters and brother-in-laws were great travel companions, both helping me be active if I wanted, but giving space as needed. We all needed our own time too. I had melancholy moments; hard not to when you see both young and old couples, families and the "I wish's" come into my head. There was a late change with one couple, so we were a bit smaller. One port was cancelled due to weather, and they had a return the first night to port while we slept for a medical emergency.

My adult children benefited from the port dockage credit as I applied to a $50 bottle of Caribbean rum. I also bought a goofy hat, but one for sun protection that I'll use doing yard work or at the lake, some candy, and Coffee in Puerto Rico. No more travel t-shirts or hoodies. Prices were high for low quality tourist merchandise. I used my last credit plus another $4.08 to donate to the casino😅😅.

There's not too much to highlight day to day. We had a beach day plus walked around and had dinner in old San Juan. We took a driving tour and ride to Mountain Top for banana daiquiris, then a sky tram ride to Paradise Point for bushwhackers (I passed on those), shopping, and lunch in St Thomas. I think I consumed more alcohol this past week than in the previous six months. I'm not exaggerating, but then again, I'm not a big drinker. I can thank my husband for sharing his fondness for Pina Colada's. I hadn't been a big fan, but dang if they didn't grow on me, literally. No weigh in yet. I'm giving my body a recovery week of good healthy eating and will weigh in Sunday morning, my normal day. I am anticipating at least a five-pound weight gain-bracing myself for the numbers.

Cruising is not for everyone. It's probably not my first choice either, but for my first vacation without my husband, a good choice. On sea days or before or after the ports, I played the trivia games, went to the shows, enjoyed live music, and a couple seminars. I had company if I wanted, and quiet time if I didn't. I won't be an annual cruiser, maybe every five years, give or take a few. I like the idea of taking my family somewhere like my MIL did back in 2016 on the Alaska cruise. I'll look to maybe five years from now, though the family may grow by then. Even better.

I have nothing but love and appreciation for the staff and crew of the Caribbean Princess, sailing dates February 18-25, 2024. Even though there's a daily gratuity charge, I had mine prepaid along with drinks and Wi-Fi in a package, I tipped extra in cash. I come from a family of service providers, so it's in my DNA, but no additional tipping is expected or required. If you needed or wanted something, I just asked, and like magic, it soon appeared. Nestor, my groups steward was so kind, and maybe looked out for me a bit extra, or it felt that way. The Cruise Director and team were cheesy in the fun vacation way, and my goodness the dining room staff and bartenders!!! (Can't even add enough !!!)

Now, I could harp about the crap show at Fort Lauderdale Airport check-in, baggage, security, and poor waiting areas, but why ruin things? It was a long travel day Sunday. sprinkled a few pictures for those that have interest. Now to get back to getting caught up on work.

Just beautiful blue seas ahead.

  1. Welcome back!! It sounds like it was the perfect get a way for you and exactly what you needed right now with the balance of fun and quiet time. We've done one cruise and I have to say it wasn't for us but I can see why some do enjoy them. I hope returning to the real world and especially work is a smooth transition for you.

    1. I think you either need to love a party atmosphere, or the relaxation and pampering around the clock to be cruise people on the regular. I'd rather explore at my schedule but for this year, this worked.

  2. I'm glad the cruise served you well. Agreed, cruising isn't for everyone. I hated it! Sis had to do it for her 65th birthday and asked all us siblings to go (our own expense of course). Not only did we not enjoy it we loathed it and the $12k it cost us since she selected THE most expensive week of the year!!!! Port time was less than 8h each since you don't get off for nearly 4h after dock and must be on 3h before departure. So exploring the area was very limited as were excursions. The brochure doesn't tell you that. We don't gamble, we don't shop/accumulate, we don't eat around the clock, shows started at 10pm......and to top it off, our credit card got nailed with a $1600 charge 4w after returning without explanation because apparently the "contract" says they don't have to tell you what it's for. Never again!

    OK, off that soapbox ;-)

    1. Woah! My single inside cabin trip, plus extra day before, plus air, one night hotel and spending money was under $2900, and I had the all inclusive drink package and tips. I do hate the short port times- my son's biggest complaint about cruising. I can see why you soured on a cruise.

  5. Welcome home!!
Love the pictures! The scenery is gorgeous, and I'm sure the weather was a nice change from winter. I'm glad that you were able to go with your sisters and have time together and alone.
I have only been on one cruise, and it was to Alaska on the Ruby Princess, and we loved it!!! I probably wouldn't have been able to experience Glacier bay otherwise. I guess each cruise line is different, but we really enjoyed our Princess cruise, and I'm glad to hear that the Caribbean Princess was fun.

    1. Swimming in the Caribbean was wonderful. Princess has an older clientele but they do a wonderful job.

    1. I put cream on first. I hope I don't offend anyone. They just put it on our plates when served.

  8. Glad you were able to relax! We have been on many cruises, but not since Covid. They don't make much money off of us (we don't gamble or drink).

    1. I probably under used my drink package but it included the coffee drinks and lattes too. My gambling was to use up my credit.

  9. So happy that you went and enjoyed yourself! We've been to those places too, with my brother and sister in-law on a Norwegian ship in Dec. of 2021. Did you have a banana daquiri at Mountain Top? I think that is mandatory. lolz We discovered that we are not Carribbean cruisers but rather Alaskan or International ones. 8-)
We've found that each cruise we take is a bit less enjoyable(started cruising right after the lines started up after Covid)as the ships fill up with more and more people and the company cuts back on services, etc. we had issues. The British Isles cruise last Spring was ok but there were issues and we actually had a better time having 2 days added on where we explored London before hitting the boat. This cruise in April may be our last, or at least we may try a different line.
But going with your sibling group sounds nice.

    1. I did have the banana daiquiri on Mountain Top, but no bushwhackers at Paradise Point. I didn't notice much change in quality of service since our 2013 last Princess cruise. Our Alaska was Norwegian Cruises, also pre-covid in 2016. Im thinking Mediterranean, but maybe with time both before and after. That's 5+ years in the future.

  10. I am so glad you had a good time with your family on the cruise. My sister and I can have fun together just about anywhere and I know we would on a ship.
Hope the scale is kind to you!

    1. One of the best afternoons was spent playing cards and just chilling in the warm sea air. I'm fortunate to have sisters that are also friends and my BIL's are good guys.

  11. It is great to hear you are back on land. The pictures are wonderful, especially the blue sea. I am glad you went with family. I am not sure I would enjoy a cruise. I would probably need a scooter to get about. I am wondering what ports you visited and what excursions. Did your knee behave?

    1. There were scooters a plenty! I reecapped my ports above. Only excision was to a private beach, but we did other activities in both San Juan and St Thomas. My knee did ok.
